Tip Tuesday πŸ΄πŸ’

Ever notice how a horse seems to "know" how you're feeling before you've said a word?

That's not magic β€” it's biology. Horses are prey animals, which means reading the energy of everything around them isn't optional, it's survival. A racing heart rate, shallow breathing, tension in your shoulders... they pick up on all of it, often before we've even noticed it ourselves.

Here's a simple groundwork exercise to try:

Before you halter up or ask your horse for anything, just stand with them for a minute. Breathe. Notice what your body is doing β€” are your shoulders tight? Is your breath shallow? Now watch your horse. Are they mirroring you? Head high, weight shifted back, ears busy?

The goal isn't to "perform" calm. Horses see through that fast. It's to actually find it β€” a slower breath, a softer body β€” and then notice what shifts in them, too.

This is the quiet groundwork most people never see: learning to read your own state so you can read theirs. It's a skill that carries into pretty much everything else in life, too.

More on this soon β€” it's actually a big piece of what we lean on all month coming up in September. πŸ’š

International Overdose Awareness Day

For a lot of veterans and first responders, the hardest part isn't what happened. It's what to do with it afterward.

Trauma doesn't just disappear when the uniform comes off or the shift ends. And for many, substances become the only tool anyone ever handed them to make the noise go quiet.

We believe there's another way through β€” one that doesn't ask you to numb what you're carrying, but to actually move it. At Gifted Herd, our horses partner with veterans and first responders to process trauma in a way that doesn't require words and doesn't require a substance to feel okay for an hour.

Today, on International Overdose Awareness Day, we're thinking of everyone still looking for their way through, and everyone we've lost along the way. You don't have to carry it alone, and you don't have to numb it to survive it.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential, and available 24/7: 1-800-662-4357

🐴 Training Tip: Why We Let the Horse Choose to Approach 🐴
You'll notice something at Gifted Herd β€” we don't chase, lure, or corner a horse to get them close. We wait. And when they choose to walk up on their own, that's the moment that matters.

This is consent-based groundwork. Instead of making a horse come to us, we give them the space to decide whether they want to. When they do, it's real trust β€” not compliance.
It's a small shift with a big meaning: a horse who approaches you because they want to is telling you something a horse who's been pressured into it never can.
This is the heart of how we work. We partner with horses. We don't use them as instruments β€” their willingness is the whole point, not an obstacle to get past.

Next time you're with a horse, try waiting instead of reaching. See who decides to close the distance. 🐴

🐴 Tuesday Tip: Easing Sensory Overwhelm Before & After the Barn 🐴
For neurodivergent kids, even a beloved place like the barn can be a lot β€” new smells, sounds, textures, and the transition itself. One small strategy that helps: build a transition ritual around the car.

Something as simple as:
πŸš— On the way in β€” the same song, every time. Or counting five things they can see out the window. Anything that says "we're shifting gears" without demanding a big reaction.
πŸš— On the way out β€” a few quiet minutes before pulling away. No questions, no debrief. Just let their nervous system come back down at its own pace.

The ritual doesn't have to be fancy β€” it just has to be consistent. Predictability is what turns a transition from a jolt into a bridge.
This isn't just a barn thing. The same idea works before school, after a birthday party, or any time a big sensory shift is coming. Once you find a ritual that clicks, it travels with you.

What's your family's go-to transition ritual? Share it with us β€” we'd love to hear. πŸ’›

🐴 Tuesday Tip: Supporting a Loved One After an EAT Session
If someone you love just finished an equine-assisted therapy session, it's natural to want to know how it went. But "how was it?" can feel like pressure to perform β€” like there's a right answer, or a report due.
Try this instead:
"Want to tell me about your horse today?"
It's a small shift, but it matters. It hands them the door instead of asking them to walk through one you picked. They get to decide what to share, how much, and when β€” or whether they'd rather just sit with it for a while first.
A few other gentle openers that leave room instead of asking for it:
🐴 "I'm here whenever you want to talk."
🐴 "That sounds like it took a lot out of you."
🐴 Sometimes, no question at all β€” just quiet company.

Processing takes time. The most supportive thing you can offer isn't the right question β€” it's patience while they find their own words.

National Purple Heart Day
Today we honor the service members who were wounded or killed in action β€” those who carry the Purple Heart, this nation's oldest military decoration, first established by George Washington in 1782.
Nearly 1.9 million have been awarded since. Each one marks a moment of sacrifice most of us will never fully understand.
To every recipient, and to the families who carried that weight alongside them: thank you. Your service is remembered today, and always.

🐴 For the veterans at Gifted Herd who carry this history with them β€” we're honored to walk alongside you.

🐴 Tuesday Training Tip: Reading Your Horse's "Yellow Light" 🚦

Every horse has a warning system β€” you just have to learn the language.
Long before a horse acts out, they're telling you they're getting anxious. Catching those early "yellow light" signals is one of the best ways to strengthen your bond and keep both of you safe.

Watch for:
🐴 Ear position β€” pinned back or swiveling fast
🐴 Tail swishing β€” quick, irritated flicks (not just shooing flies)
🐴 Weight shift β€” leaning away, tensing, or shifting off a leg

Getting to know your horse's baseline isn't just for therapy horses β€” it matters for every horse, every handler, every time.
What "yellow light" signals do you look for? Drop them in the comments πŸ‘‡

National VFR Day β€” For those who run toward danger, we offer a place to stand still.
Today, we're honoring the men and women who run toward danger so the rest of us don't have to.
At Gifted Herd, veterans and first responders aren't just who we serve β€” they're why we exist. Our horses show up for them the same way they've shown up for all of us: steady, present, and without judgment.
Here's what that looks like in practice:

🐎 Equine partnership sessions β€” no riding required. Just presence, trust, and the kind of nervous-system regulation that's hard to find anywhere else.
🐎 Trauma-informed support for processing what words alone can't always reach.
🐎 A herd that doesn't ask you to explain yourself β€” horses read energy, not resumes. They meet you exactly where you are.

Every one of our facilitators is experienced in trauma-informed equine-assisted work, so our sessions are grounded, safe, and built specifically for the nervous systems of people who've carried a lot.
Some wounds don't have words. Horses don't need them.
If you're a veteran or first responder (or you know one) who could use a place to just be for a while β€” we're here. πŸ’›
