As the blooms of summer fade away and the leaves begin to change and start to fall to the ground, it may be tempting to want to clean up the yard and rake them up. However, did you know that leaving the leaves until spring can have enormous benefits for local wildlife?
Fallen leaves provide shelter from the cold winter elements for small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians! Insects and some pollinators even lay their eggs on the leaves, while some adult insects will overwinter in leaf piles. Leaving the leaves can ensure winter snacks for birds and other critters and plenty of pollinators when spring rolls in! 🍁
