Founded around 1956 in Longmont, SVRC still includes original members—now joined by their grandchildren.

We’re officially just 15 DAYS away from our next St. Vrain Round Up Club show! 🎉

Which means it might be time to start thinking about that show-day packing list…

What’s the ONE thing you absolutely refuse to go to a horse show without?

Maybe it’s:

✨ Baby wipes — because somehow they fix everything
🧽 An unreasonable number of grooming supplies
🧷 Safety pins for emergencies
🥕 Enough horse treats to bribe your way through the entire day
💦 Water… lots and lots of water
👕 An extra show shirt because horses have impeccable timing

We all know the horse you have at home and the horse you unload at a show can occasionally be… two entirely different individuals. 😂

So which one shows up on show day?

😇 The Professional — “I’ve trained my entire life for this moment.”

👀 The Tourist — Has to look at EVERYTHING. Twice.

📢 The Town Crier — Announces their arrival to every horse on the property.

😴 The Veteran — “Wake me up when my class starts.”

🚀 The Overachiever — Suddenly has approximately 47% more energy than they did at home.

🤡 The Comedian — Picks show day to debut a brand-new behavior you have NEVER seen before.

👑 The Diva — Will perform beautifully, but only under their very specific terms.

Earlier this week we talked about Showmanship, where the handler is judged while presenting their horse from the ground.

Today, let’s talk about HORSEMANSHIP! 🤠

In a horsemanship class, the focus shifts to the rider. The judge is looking at how effectively and correctly the rider communicates with their horse while completing a pattern.

You might be asked to:

🐎 Walk, jog, or lope
🔄 Perform circles, turns, or pivots
↩️ Back your horse
🛑 Make smooth transitions and stops
📍 Follow a designated pattern

The goal isn’t simply having the fanciest horse—it’s showing control, accuracy, balance, confidence, and teamwork between horse and rider. ❤️

And just like Showmanship, it’s a class where all those little details can make a BIG difference!

Let’s talk SHOWMANSHIP!

If you’re newer to horse shows, you might wonder…

🤔 What exactly is Showmanship?

Unlike riding classes, Showmanship is performed from the ground. The judge is looking at how well the handler presents and works with their horse through a pattern.

You may be asked to:

🐴 Walk and trot your horse in hand
🔄 Perform turns or pivots
🛑 Halt and back
✨ Set your horse up for inspection
👀 Stay aware of the judge throughout your pattern

It’s all about preparation, precision, teamwork, and presenting your horse at their best! ❤️

And the best part? Practicing Showmanship is a great way to build communication with your horse—even when you’re not in the saddle.
