💔🐾 Baxter Update – He Deserves Better 🐾💔

A couple of weeks ago, we shared the happy news that Baxter had finally found his forever home… but unfortunately, that same day, Baxter was returned to the rescue.
This one hurts.

Baxter spent 6 years in an outdoor kennel, followed by 2 years in a kennel here at the rescue. After all that time, he finally got a taste of home life… but only for one month out of his 8 years.

We were told that Baxter was very anxious and didn’t warm up to people quickly — which is completely understandable given his past. But here’s what we also know:
💙 He had no accidents in the house
💙 He was quiet as a mouse
💙 And he loved the couch 🛋️

Baxter just needs time, patience, and someone willing to let him adjust at his own pace. He’s not a “perfect right away” dog — but he will be worth it for the right person.

At this point, we would love to get Baxter into a home environment again, whether that’s a forever home or even a temporary foster to help him decompress.

He has spent almost his entire life in kennels — let’s not let that continue. 💔

Being overlooked since November 2025 is no fun when your a shelter dog……… Erza lounging on her bed after walks by volunteers as she is trying to be the happiest girl who continues to be overlooked…….. Erza came into our shelter as an owner surrender, so yes she did have a family at one point in her life, but sadly for the last almost 5months she has been a shelter dog with no one looking into making her apart of their home……Erza could use some love as she is an amazing dog that is truly just being overlooked…. Erza is a hound mix that is around 2yrs old and she weighs about 53lbs. According to previous family Erza is housebroken and good with kids. Erza does need a home with no cats! Erza is very playful and absolute love toys!! Erza is a beautiful girl we truly hope that soon she will find her place as she deserves so much more than shelter life. If everyone could please take time from their day to share Erza, let’s hope she touches the heart of someone who could give her the best life possible. Erza needs all the love and help her find a family!! Our hours are Monday, Tuesday, Friday 10-2 and Saturday 10-3.
Someone please give our amazing girl Erza the chance she truly deserves!!!

Brazil shelter hires only homeless people to care for rescued animals .🐾❤️

Sometimes the most powerful ideas come from simple kindness. In Brazil, one animal shelter chose to look at two problems and see one solution. Homelessness and abandoned pets are both painful realities. Instead of separating them, this shelter decided to bring healing to both at the same time.

The shelter made the bold decision to hire only homeless people to care for rescued dogs and cats. Workers feed, clean, and play with the animals each day. They also learn about health and behavior on the job. The animals receive more attention, and the staff gain steady work, skills, and dignity.

This project shows how compassion can create real change. As the animals grow healthier and more trusting, they find homes faster. At the same time, workers build confidence and hope for a better future. When people and animals support each other like this, could it be a model other communities try next?

Sometimes the hardest surrenders aren’t about love — they’re about life changing in an instant. 💔

Meet Lola & Freddy. They are in urgent need of an adopter or a foster. Please read their story with an open heart.

These two soulful Pit Bull mixes — a bonded brother and sister — had their world turned upside down just weeks ago.

Their dad was involved in a tragic accident that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. One ordinary day. One irreversible moment. He has been fighting for his life in the ICU ever since.

Their mom has been living between hospital rooms and heartbreak, spending every possible hour by her husband’s side while trying to hold together what’s left of their normal life. As days turned into weeks, it became painfully clear that Lola & Freddy were struggling — long hours alone, confused, anxious, waiting for the people who always came home… but now couldn’t.

Out of pure love and desperation, she reached out to Paws for Life NC, hoping for temporary help while navigating an impossible future. With no immediate foster space available, our friends at Audrey’s Barkyard — big-hearted Pit Bull advocates — stepped in to help during this crisis.

Then reality settled in.

A long road of recovery. A move closer to a specialized medical facility. A future that looks nothing like the one they planned.

With unimaginable pain, their mom has made the most selfless decision of her life — to find Lola & Freddy a new home where they can have stability, companionship, and the love they deserve, while she dedicates everything she has to her husband’s care.

These two have never known life apart. They sleep curled up together, draw comfort from each other, and face the world as a team. Losing their family wasn’t their choice — but we can make sure they don’t lose each other too.

🙏 Lola & Freddy are now with Paws for Life NC and urgently need a foster or adoptive home willing to keep them together. A calm home. A soft landing. People who understand that sometimes love comes with a story — and that healing happens on both sides of the leash.

By opening your heart to these two, you won’t just be changing their lives — you’ll be restoring hope to a family that has already lost so much.

Please comment below if you can help. Sharing this story truly matters. 🐾❤️

🚨 Medical Foster Needed for Kernel 🚨

Kernel is in need of a medical foster as he prepares for surgery on February 17, 2026 at Helping Hands Veterinary Clinic in Richmond, VA.

Kernel came to us from a backyard breeding situation where, sadly, his eye ruptured and was never treated by a veterinarian. Because it was left to heal on its own, his eye socket never properly closed. This upcoming surgery is necessary to surgically reopen and correctly close the eye socket, helping to prevent ongoing discomfort and future complications.

🩺 What Kernel Needs:
• A calm, loving medical foster during his recovery
• Someone able to monitor him post-op and provide basic aftercare
• Bonus: A foster who can help transport him to follow-up appointments in Richmond
Kernel is a sweet boy who deserves comfort, patience, and a safe place to heal. If you’ve ever considered fostering — this is a wonderful way to make a huge impact for a dog who truly needs it.

We are need of blankets of all sizes (especially large). We cannot use blankets that have filling, however. We could also use more heavy duty large contractor bags and toys (dog and cat). We are always so thankful for our generous community! If you are dropping off items at the shelter, there is a bin by the front door that donations can be left in at any time if we are not opened.

A woman learned her former dog had been surrendered to a kill shelter by her ex-boyfriend.

For months after their breakup, she searched everywhere for her blue-gray pitbull, Max—calling shelters, posting flyers, following dead ends. Then she got the call that stopped her heart. Max had been surrendered to a high-intake kill shelter and was scheduled to be euthanized the very next morning.

She rushed there after hours, only to find the doors locked and the lights off. With time running out and no one willing to help, she made a split-second decision. She broke a window, disabled the alarm, and ran through rows of cold metal kennels until she finally found him—her pitbull, terrified but alive.

She scooped Max into her arms and ran.

By morning, shelter staff discovered the broken window and the missing dog. Police issued a warrant for burglary and theft. Security footage clearly showed her breaking in and carrying the pitbull out.

Three days later, she turned herself in—with Max right beside her.

Facing felony charges, she told the court the truth: Max had been stolen from her by her ex-boyfriend, who had no legal right to surrender him. Her attorney backed it up with veterinary records, photos, and microchip registration proving Max was hers all along. The surrender, the court learned, had been done out of spite.

The judge dropped every charge against her and instead issued a warrant for the ex-boyfriend for theft and illegal surrender. Max, the blue-gray pitbull nearly lost to the system, was officially returned home.

She still had to pay civil penalties for the broken window—and she paid without hesitation.

“Breaking that window saved my dog’s life,” she said.

This case exposed serious flaws in shelter surrender procedures and identity verification—and reminded everyone how close even a loved, owned pitbull can come to being lost forever. 🐾🐾

Just a reminder: possums, raccoons, and skunks don’t hibernate. In cold weather, they look for sheltered places to stay warm, and it’s completely normal to see them moving around in winter. If they rest near your home, it’s okay to let them be—they’re simply trying to survive the season.

If the weather is severe and you’d like to help, you can leave out a small amount of appropriate food, such as fruits or regular dog or cat food. Avoid processed meats or anything heavily seasoned. Fresh water placed low to the ground can also make a big difference, since natural sources often freeze.

Please remember: helping wildlife doesn’t mean drawing them close to your home or encouraging them to rely on people. Simply giving them safe space and occasional support during extreme cold is enough.

These animals play an important role in the ecosystem. Opossums, in particular, are known for eating ticks and other pests that we’d rather not have around.

All life matters—and a little understanding goes a long way in helping our wild neighbors get through winter safely.
