GROUP: 💪 Working
ORIGINAL JOB: Hunting large game and later guarding and working alongside people
KNOWN FOR: Playfulness • Athleticism • Loyalty • Energy • Goofy personalities

Ever wonder why your Boxer bounces around like a kangaroo, uses their paws for everything, or acts like a 60-pound puppy well into adulthood? 😂

There’s actually some history behind all that enthusiasm!

🐗 BRED FOR STRENGTH & COURAGE

Boxers were developed in Germany from powerful hunting dogs, including the now-extinct Bullenbeisser.

Their ancestors helped hunters hold large game, such as wild boar, until the hunters arrived.

Over time, Boxers became versatile working dogs used for guarding, protection, and companionship.

That required strength, confidence, athleticism, and a willingness to work closely with people.

🥊 WHY ARE THEY CALLED BOXERS?

One popular explanation is their tendency to stand up and use their front paws during play, almost like they’re boxing!

While the exact origin of their name is debated, anyone who’s watched a Boxer play can probably understand the comparison. 😂

🏠 YOU CAN STILL SEE THE JOB AT HOME!

Your Boxer may:

• Bounce around when excited
• Use their front paws during play
• LOVE wrestling and physical games
• Follow their people everywhere
• Be alert to unfamiliar activity
• Become extremely enthusiastic about visitors
• Carry toys around proudly
• Wiggle their entire body when happy
• Act like they’re still a puppy at five years old 😂

Sometimes that goofy energy belongs to a dog with some seriously athletic working ancestry!

🧠 WHY ARE THEY SO ENERGETIC?

Boxers were developed to be strong, active, and responsive working dogs.

Many still thrive when they have opportunities to move, play, learn, and interact with their people.

Without appropriate outlets, all that enthusiasm can turn into some pretty creative household entertainment!

🎾 WHAT DO THEY LOVE?

🥊 Interactive play
🎾 Fetch and tug
🎓 Training and learning tricks
👃 Scent games
🧩 Puzzle toys
🚶 Walks and adventures
❤️ Spending time with their people

💡 FUN BOXER FACTS

🇩🇪 Boxers originated in Germany.

🐗 Their ancestors were used for hunting large game.

🥊 Their playful use of their front paws is often associated with their name.

🐶 Boxers are famous for their whole-body wiggles, sometimes called the “kidney bean dance.”

❤️ THE BIG TAKEAWAY

The Boxer wasn’t developed simply to be a goofy family companion.

Generations of working dogs contributed traits such as:

STRENGTH • COURAGE • ATHLETICISM • ALERTNESS • COOPERATION

So the next time your Boxer greets you with a full-body wiggle, throws their paws around during play, or bounces across the living room like a kangaroo…

You might just be seeing a little piece of the energetic working dog behind that goofy personality. 😂

🐾 Today we wanna talk about QUICKS! 🐶

Have you ever wondered why your dog’s nails can’t always be trimmed as short as you’d like, even when they seem way too long?

The answer is something called the quick!

The quick is the sensitive tissue inside your dog’s nail that contains blood vessels and nerves. As nails grow longer, the quick can extend farther into the nail, making it difficult to safely shorten overgrown nails in just one visit.

That’s why we’re such big believers in consistent nail maintenance! ❤️

With regular trims, patience, and a little time, the quick can gradually recede, allowing us to safely work toward shorter, healthier nails without causing unnecessary pain or stress.

We put together this guide to explain what the quick is, why it matters, and why getting those nails back to a healthy length can sometimes take multiple visits.

Remember, our goal isn’t to get your dog’s nails as short as possible TODAY. It’s to get them as short as safely possible while keeping your pup comfortable and confident throughout the process. 🐾

Small trims. Consistent care. Healthier paws! ❤️

🐾✨ Dog(s) of the Week: Rudy & Darryl! ✨🐾

They say everyone has a twin somewhere in the world… well, apparently Rudy and Darryl found theirs! 😂❤️

This week, we’re breaking our one-dog rule again, because quite frankly, we’re not entirely convinced these two aren’t the same dog!

Meet Rudy and Darryl, the literal definition of two peas in a pod! 🫛🐶🐶

These boys don’t just look like they belong together, they seem to share the same brain! They move the same, think the same, and somehow always seem to be on the exact same wavelength. Watching them together is like seeing the same personality running on two different sets of legs. 😂

Whether they’re hanging out, getting excited, or just being their goofy selves, these two are practically carbon copies of one another. Different dogs, same operating system! And we absolutely love it!

One of our favorite things about what we do is getting to know each dog’s unique personality, but Rudy and Darryl have us wondering if we should just count theirs as one! ❤️

A huge thank you to Rudy and Darryl’s family for trusting Gents & Paws with these two amazing boys. We absolutely love getting to spend time with them, and they never fail to put a smile on our faces!

Congratulations, Rudy & Darryl, our Dogs of the Week! 🏆🐾

🐾 GENTS & PAWS - BREED OF THE WEEK 🐾
⭐ THE SIBERIAN HUSKY ⭐

GROUP: 💪 Working
ORIGINAL JOB: Pulling sleds across long distances
KNOWN FOR: Endurance • Independence • Energy • Vocal personalities

Ever wonder why your Husky loves to run, argues with you about everything, or acts like coming inside is the worst thing that’s ever happened to them? 😂

There’s actually a reason for that!

❄️ BRED TO RUN

Siberian Huskies were developed by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull sleds across long distances in freezing conditions.

Their job required incredible endurance, teamwork, intelligence, and determination.

Unlike dogs bred for short bursts of strength, Huskies were built to keep moving for miles!

🧠 WHY ARE THEY SO INDEPENDENT?

Working sled dogs needed to follow directions while also navigating difficult terrain and conditions.

That independence is still easy to spot today!

Your Husky might understand exactly what you’re asking…

They’re just deciding whether it’s worth listening. 😂

🏠 YOU CAN STILL SEE THE JOB AT HOME!

Your Husky may:

• LOVE running and exploring
• Pull enthusiastically on walks
• Howl, whine, or “talk” back
• Enjoy the company of other dogs
• Have a strong desire to roam
• Dig holes or find creative ways to escape
• Become bored without enough activity
• Act like every conversation is an argument 😂

Sometimes what looks like mischief is simply a working dog’s instincts looking for an outlet.

❄️ BUILT FOR THE COLD

Their thick double coat helped protect them from Siberia’s freezing temperatures.

Their fluffy tails can even cover their noses while sleeping!

And while they’re built for cold weather, Huskies can still live in warmer climates with proper care, although Texas summers require extra precautions.

🎾 WHAT DO THEY LOVE?

🏃 Running and exploring
🐕 Social play
👃 Scent games
🧩 Puzzle toys
🥾 Hiking in cooler weather
🎓 Training and problem-solving
🛷 Appropriate pulling activities

💡 FUN HUSKY FACTS

🐺 Despite their wolf-like appearance, Huskies are domestic dogs, not wolf hybrids.

👀 They can have blue eyes, brown eyes, or even one of each!

🛷 They were bred for endurance, not simply pulling the heaviest loads.

📣 Their famous howling and dramatic personalities have made them internet favorites.

❤️ THE BIG TAKEAWAY

The Siberian Husky wasn’t created to sit around waiting for instructions.

Generations of Huskies were selected to:

RUN • ENDURE • COOPERATE • NAVIGATE • EXPLORE

So the next time your Husky argues about coming inside, tries to explore the neighborhood, or acts like a two-mile walk was just a warm-up…

You might just be watching a little piece of what they were bred to do. 😂

🐾 Today we want to talk about BATHS! 🛁🐶

We’ve all heard the recommendation to bathe your dog every 4-6 weeks, but the reality is that there isn’t one perfect schedule for every dog.

Instead of asking “Has it been long enough?” we like to ask “Why does my dog need a bath?”

If their coat is clean, their skin is healthy, they don’t smell, and they haven’t gotten into anything dirty, some dogs can comfortably go much longer between baths. Coat type, lifestyle, skin health, activity level, environment, and even how naturally oily their coat is should all play a role.

There is one important exception: dogs with coats that are prone to matting should generally stay on a regular grooming/bathing schedule, often around every 4-6 weeks. Proper bathing, drying, brushing, and coat maintenance can help prevent tangles from turning into painful mats.

Bathing is a tool for keeping your dog clean, comfortable, and healthy… not an appointment that automatically becomes necessary because a date popped up on the calendar.

❤️ Healthy skin doesn’t run on a schedule. Bathe for a reason, not just because the calendar says so.

🐾✨ Dog of the Week: Penny! ✨🐾

They say good things come in small packages, and Penny might be the best proof we’ve ever seen! ❤️

This little girl is absolutely jam-packed with love, happiness, and enough excitement for a dog ten times her size. Penny loves everyone, loves everything, and every time we walk through the door, she acts like it’s the greatest day of her life. 😂

She’s even managed to accomplish something we don’t see every day… Penny gives the Dremel kisses! Apparently even the nail equipment deserves a little love in Penny’s world. 😂💕

And when you’re working through her siblings, you better keep track of whose turn it is. If there’s an opening, Penny has absolutely no problem sneaking her way back in and attempting to score a second turn. Nice try, Penny, we know we already did you! 😂🐾

Her happiness is contagious, her personality is HUGE, and it’s impossible to visit without leaving with a smile on our faces.

A huge thank you to Penny’s family for trusting Gents & Paws with this little bundle of joy. We absolutely love getting to see her and all the excitement she brings with her.

Congratulations, Penny! You’ve kissed, wiggled, and snuck your way into being our Dog of the Week! 🏆🐶❤️

🐾 GENTS & PAWS BREED OF THE WEEK 🐾
⭐ THE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG ⭐

GROUP: 💪 Working
ORIGINAL JOB: Swiss farm dog: pulling carts, driving cattle & helping around the farm
KNOWN FOR: Strength • Affection • Calm confidence • Loyalty • That beautiful tricolor coat

Big, fluffy, and usually convinced they’re small enough to sit directly on top of you. 😂

But underneath all that fur is a dog whose ancestors were built to WORK.

🏔️ BRED FOR THE SWISS FARMS

Bernese Mountain Dogs originated in Switzerland, where they served as versatile farm dogs.

They weren’t bred for just one specialized task.

They helped drive cattle, watch over the farm, and pull carts loaded with goods.

That required a dog that was powerful enough for heavy work but steady enough to live and work closely alongside a family.

🛒 YES—THEY PULLED CARTS!

One of the Berner’s most interesting historical jobs was draft work.

Their size and strength allowed them to pull carts carrying farm products, including milk and cheese.

And that working history hasn’t completely disappeared—carting and drafting are still activities Bernese Mountain Dogs can participate in today.

🏠 YOU CAN STILL SEE THE JOB AT HOME!

Your Berner may:

• Want to stay close to their people
• Lean their entire body against you for attention
• Happily follow the family around
• Enjoy having a job or routine
• Carry or move things around
• Be surprisingly strong when they decide to go somewhere
• Prefer cooler weather
• Completely underestimate how much space they occupy 😂

Sometimes that giant shadow following you around is simply doing what Berners have done for generations:

Staying close to their people.

❄️ BUILT FOR THE COLD

That gorgeous coat isn’t just for looks.

Bernese Mountain Dogs have a thick double coat that helped protect them while working in Switzerland’s cold climate.

Which helps explain why many Berners think a snowy winter day is wonderful…

while a Texas summer is a completely different conversation. 😂

🎾 WHAT DO THEY LOVE?

Many Berners enjoy:

🚶 Walks & outdoor adventures
❄️ Cool-weather activities
🎓 Training with their people
👃 Scent games
🛒 Carting & draft activities
🧩 Problem solving
❤️ And plenty of family time

💡 FUN BERNER FACTS

🇨🇭 The Bernese Mountain Dog originated in Switzerland.

🛒 They historically pulled carts transporting goods around farms and communities.

🐄 They also helped move cattle, making them true all-purpose farm dogs.

🏔️ They’re one of four traditional Swiss mountain dog breeds, easily recognized by their classic black, white, and rust coloring.

❤️ THE BIG TAKEAWAY

The Bernese Mountain Dog wasn’t created simply to be a giant fluffy companion.

Generations of Berners were selected to:

PULL • MOVE LIVESTOCK • WORK • STAY CLOSE • HELP

So the next time your 100-pound Berner leans their entire body against you because apparently being near you isn’t quite close enough…

You might just be seeing a little piece of the loyal farm dog they were bred to be. 😂❤️

🐾 Today we wanna talk about PUPPIES! 🐶❤️

When it comes to nail trims, grooming, vet visits, and everyday handling, one of the best things we can do for our dogs is start them young!

The puppy stage is an incredible opportunity to introduce things like having their paws touched, hearing a Dremel, having their ears handled, and experiencing new sights, sounds, people, and environments all while keeping those experiences positive and rewarding.

The goal isn’t just to make puppyhood easier. It’s to build the confidence and trust that they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives.

We put together this guide explaining why early desensitization matters, what you can introduce at home, and how those little experiences today can make a BIG difference tomorrow. 🐾

Small experiences. Big difference. Confident puppies become confident dogs. ❤️
