The best week of fall so far at Best Friends Prairie View.

The off-leash outdoor play area ran nonstop. If you're on the monthly subscription, you got your money's worth twice over this week — this is exactly the stretch it's built for.

Enrichment add-ons ran all week. Sniff mats and puzzle feeders land differently when the whole yard smells like October.

Mornings were down to 45 degrees and not one dog complained.

Pet of the Week: Rugby.

Vizsla, 8, from Lake Zurich. Here 3 days a week.

Rugby spent his first two weeks watching the group from the fence line. That's normal, and it's why we ease dogs in with a temperament-matched crew instead of dropping them into the biggest group we've got. Now he's first out the door and the last one to abandon the leaf pile.

The off-leash outdoor yard is, at this point, his entire personality.

Peak fall in the yard this week 🍂

Leaf pile Wednesday. It lasted 90 seconds.

Small dogs and big dogs ran separately all week — size-appropriate groups, every single day, not just when it's busy.

Our staff stayed with their groups start to finish. Ask us about our ratios, we like that question.

Paw checks caught three burr situations.

Thirty seconds at the door after every fall walk. That's the whole ask.

• Check between the toes for burrs and seed heads — the Des Plaines River Trail is full of both right now
• Look for cracked pads, since the air is getting dry
• Check nail length, because summer pavement isn't wearing them down anymore
• Check for ticks, front to back. They're active in Lake County until we get a hard frost, which is usually late October
• Don't skip behind the ears and the armpits

Most of what we find on dogs in October is something a thirty-second check at the door would have caught.

Every dog here goes home with a report card and photos. Not as a nice touch — as the record.

Who your dog played with. Whether they ate. What our team noticed.

That last one matters most. Our staff is trained to spot changes in appetite, energy, gait, and behavior, and when something looks off, you hear about it from us the same day. Families have found out here that a dog was limping, or off his food, or acting unlike himself before it turned into a vet visit.

That's the difference between a place that watches your dog and a place that holds your dog.

It starts in May.

→ Every location's boarding calendar is reviewed and capacity is locked
→ Staff schedules adjust — we add overnight coverage across the holiday week
→ Enrichment plans are rewritten for the holiday — quieter activities, more individual attention

By the time July 1 rolls around, there's a playbook for every pet in our care.

A note for everyone working this summer Friday:

Somewhere, a dog is completely asleep in a patch of sun with their out of office turned on. Their only plan for the afternoon is to continue being asleep in that patch of sun. If they move, it will only be to follow the sun as it crosses the floor.

Pretty impressive work-life boundaries, if you think about it.
