What if today we just had fun?

We spend so much time thinking about what our horses need to learn, improve, overcome, or become. We talk about building confidence, developing softness, improving the topline, getting better transitions, becoming more responsive, and fixing the things we don’t like. Before long, it can become very easy to look at a horse and see a list of things that could be better instead of seeing the magnificent creature already standing in front of us.

But what if your horse doesn’t need fixing?

What if, instead of walking into the barn thinking, “What are we going to accomplish today?” we sometimes walked in thinking, “I wonder who you are today?”

Maybe your horse wants to follow you around. Maybe they want to stand beside you in the sunshine, investigate your pockets, wander off to eat grass, and then wander back because apparently you’ve become interesting again. Maybe they want to play. Maybe they want to be scratched. Maybe they want to spend twenty minutes doing absolutely nothing with you.

And maybe they don’t want anything to do with you at all.

I actually think that can be one of the most beautiful parts of loving a horse. When we allow a relationship to exist without constantly requiring something from it, we begin to discover how much there is to enjoy that has nothing to do with training.

You can sit in the pasture while your horse grazes. You can walk together with nowhere to go. You can laugh when they do something ridiculous. You can watch them interact with their friends, notice the way they move through the world, and learn things about them simply because you were paying attention.

There doesn't always have to be a lesson.

There doesn't always have to be a goal.

There doesn't always have to be an accomplishment.

What if today we just had fun?

Sometimes there can just be a horse being a horse, and a human being lucky enough to share the same piece of earth.

And perhaps one of the greatest shifts we can make in our relationships with horses is to stop looking at them as unfinished versions of something we have imagined they should become.

Maybe the horse standing in front of you isn't waiting to become a better horse.

Maybe they're already exactly who they are supposed to be.

And maybe our privilege is simply getting to know them.

Did you know.....The Tongue 👅 is the most sensitive part of your horse's mouth and the most prone to injury.

This very large muscle extends from its tip, which you can see, to the hyoid apparatus and its attachment to the ramus of the mandible at the back.

The tongue is vital for swallowing and influencing the hyoid apparatus

Like any other muscle, restriction or tension within it can induce a muscular chain reaction.

The sensitivity of the tongue is a crucial consideration when fitting a bit. An ill-fitting or harsh bit or excessive pressure on the bit from your hands can cause pain and discomfort. In some cases it can result in tension throughout the body and poor performance.
