What would we put in a Poultry First-Aid kit? We get asked aaaalllllll the time for help with a list of items that everyone should have in their chicken/ barn emergency kit. We struggle to give instructions on what to buy, where to find the things you need, and to find items in quantities that make sense. These things get expensive! It’s easy to spend hundreds of dollars on a few simple things, because most items used for poultry are actually manufactured and sold in dosing and concentrations for cattle, horses, humans, or other livestock. The biggest problem- WASTE! The next concern? Safety…. With concentrations designed for 1000-2000 # animals, products that would be safe on a large food producing animal may not be safe on a chicken. Many products contain carcinogenic dyes (ex: gentian violet), irritants, ingredients toxic to chickens (many topical anesthetics), no dosing instructions on packaging for poultry (many drugs are manufactured for other livestock and used off-label for poultry. The dosage calculations can be tricky!) Last, a list of different symptoms tied to medical issues that cause can cause them, along with treatment options and expected outcomes- all in one place, without having to rely on Google and craziness online... Along with resources for online poultry veterinarians and resources to help guide you, no matter what part of the USA you live. We’ve collected the essentials- the stuff that we keep in our own med boxes, in quantities that make sense for a backyard flock. We help with dosage calculations, and I clue resources listing meds and supplements, indications, safety for different species, along with dosing for different conditions. Let us help you take the guesswork out of shopping for your flock! You’ll have all of the basics you need, along with resources to purchase antibiotics online as recommended by your veterinarian. Shipping available anywhere in the continental USA!

Chimpy wishes you a Happy New Year! ❤️

In the spring of 2022, Chimp laid her first soft egg. Then another and another. Laying every egg was a huge effort. She’d spend whole days attempting to pass an egg, finally lay a misshapen egg, and start the whole thing over the following morning. It was horrible to watch.

Around the same time her sister developed the same condition, called egg yolk peritonitis (a condition very common in chicken breeds bred for egg production), which resulted in her rapid decline and premature death.

Under the expert care of Dr. Grey and her technicians at Best Care Pet Hospital in Omaha, NE, Chimp was able to receive the lifesaving treatment of a suprelorin implant (a rice grain sized, hormonal implant intended to halt the production of eggs) placed just under her skin.

Unfortunately, an effective treatment came too late to save her sister, but she did not die in vain. With the knowledge that came from her death, we were able to tailor a treatment plan to save Chimp. Freed from the perpetual torment of her abnormal egg laying cycle Chimp has healed. Most importantly, her spunky character has returned.

I am just so grateful to see her chirping and clucking, and happily strutting into 2023. I cherish her. I thank God daily for her life and the blessings she brings me, my family, my neighbors and the world.

Don’t get me wrong, I love fresh eggs from my own backyard, but my girls are so much more than just egglayers! They’re my very best friends.

Being able to get Chimp the medical treatment she needed so that she could bless me for another year was my favorite part of 2022! May your 2023 be full of miracles! ❤️🐓❤️
