Have you ever spotted a cat with a tipped ear and wondered what it means?

Feral and community cats are part of our neighborhoods. While some are fearful of people, others are friendly and enjoy human interaction. Many are cared for by local residents who provide food and look out for their well-being.

These residents are known as community cat caretakers. Lexington County’s animal control ordinance addresses community cats and their caretakers, including requirements for sterilization and rabies vaccination for cats allowed to roam freely.

So, what does that tipped ear mean? It indicates that a cat has been through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). The cat is humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated as appropriate, and returned to its outdoor home. The ear tip is a visual sign that the cat has been sterilized, helping prevent unnecessary retrapping.

Why is TNR so important? It helps prevent unwanted litters, reduces future growth of outdoor cat populations, and supports healthier lives for community cats.

Need help with community cats? Local resources include Pawmetto Lifeline, Safe Cats Coalition, and Animal Mission. Reach out to learn more about available TNR programs and assistance in your area.

The next time you see a cat with a tipped ear, remember that it represents an effort to care for community cats and prevent more kittens from being born outdoors. Every TNR effort makes a difference!

We’re a little late in officially introducing Nicole, but as they say, better late than never!

Nicole has always had a love for animals, the outdoors, and helping others. After living in Nashville, Tennessee, she completed college coursework focused on small animal care. She went on to spend approximately six years working in small animal emergency medicine, where she developed strong clinical skills, learned to think quickly under pressure, and deepened her compassion for both patients and their families.

Nicole later moved to Aiken, South Carolina, where she spent a year and a half working in large animal medicine. Her experience in both small animal emergency and large animal medicine has shaped her strong work ethic, adaptability, and appreciation for the special bond between people and their animals.

Outside of the clinic, Nicole is a proud mom of two boys and loves spending as much time with them as possible. When she’s not working or making memories with her boys, you can usually find her at the gym, horseback riding, hiking, or planning her next trip to the beach. She has an adventurous spirit and loves being outdoors, and she believes some of the best days are spent surrounded by family, animals, and a little sunshine.

We’re excited to officially introduce Nicole and are grateful to have her as part of our team! Be sure to say hello the next time you see her around the clinic.

🐾 Meet Elizabeth, one of the newer members of our veterinary team! 🐾

Although she’s been with us for a couple months now, we’re excited to officially introduce you to Elizabeth, Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)!

Elizabeth graduated from Piedmont Technical College in May 2025 with an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology and became a Licensed Veterinary Technician in South Carolina in August 2025. She is also a Fear Free Certified Professional and holds RECOVER Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) certifications.

Elizabeth is passionate about providing compassionate, high-quality care while helping create a positive experience for both pets and their families. She especially enjoys assisting our doctors in the exam room, educating clients, and helping pet owners better understand their pets’ health and treatment plans.

When she’s not at the clinic, Elizabeth enjoys baking, spending time with her husband, Anthony, caring for her two dogs and two cats, tackling home improvement projects, and slowing down to enjoy the morning sun.

We’re so happy to have Elizabeth on our team and are excited for you to get to know her better! Be sure to say hello the next time you see her at the clinic! 💕

Have you ever wondered what a turtle’s X-ray looks like? Thanks to Missy Shelliot, now you know!

Missy came in because she was uninterested in her breakfast, and while she was here, she pooped out some rocks! Because of this, we took an X-ray and discovered there was something else hiding in there, too…

A few days later, Missy passed several pieces of sponge filter material!

Her diagnosis was pica due to a vitamin D deficiency. After replacing her UVB and basking bulbs, Missy has been doing much better! This is a great reminder of how important proper UVB and basking temperatures are for our reptile friends.
