Captain was an absolute dream of a pup to spend the last 5 days with, and while celebrating his homecoming journey should be pure joy, my heart has been heavy with everything this week has brought.
This past Saturday, Captain’s breeder, Christina Jones , experienced every family’s worst nightmare when a fire broke out in her home, leaving her and her children displaced. This tragedy came on top of already immense heartbreak—just a couple of days before the fire, the newborn puppies' mom passed away. In the middle of pure panic and grief, Christina showed unimaginable bravery. She fought to get her kids, Captain, her adult dogs, and a litter of bottle-feeding newborn puppies out. Heartbreakingly, one sweet newborn didn't make it, and her cat had to be treated with oxygen after hiding in a room. Through sheer grit and motherly instinct, Christina moved mountains to protect every single soul she possibly could.
Life is so short, and tragedies like this blindside you in an instant. Hold your loved ones close. When the unthinkable happens, you realize just how crucial it is to rally around your people. Christina is an incredible single mom. I’ve had the privilege of transporting for her since the beginning of this year, and to know her is to know someone who works endlessly, loves even harder, and stands firmly and unapologetically in her beliefs. The world needs so many more people like her.
The second I heard the news, I called and texted to see if I could step in and pick Captain up early to take one thing off her plate. After I got there, she even asked if I would help by taking her fish. I’m sure an aquarium was the very least of her worries in that moment, but in her exact words: a life is a life, right?
So yes, I came home with seven fish. I’ve debated heavily on whether to post them for adoption. Because a life really is a life, my kids already adore them, and I’ve genuinely thought about keeping them—but if the right home comes along, I wouldn't be opposed. Pretty sure TSA won't let me fly with an aquarium, but if you’re local and want to give seven lucky fish a great home, let me know!
I truly wish I could wave a wand and fix everything for Christina's family, but right now, what we can do is show up. It takes a village, and I know firsthand how difficult it is to ask for help when you're used to being the strong one.
