Big cats are some of Africa’s most iconic species and some of its most important 🐆🦁

Lions, leopards, and cheetahs play a vital role as apex predators, helping to regulate prey populations and maintain balance within ecosystems. Without them, entire landscapes can begin to change.

But these predators are under increasing pressure. Habitat loss, human–wildlife conflict, poaching, and declining prey availability are all contributing to population declines across the continent.

In the wild, big cats can also face serious health challenges, from injuries sustained in territorial fights to snare wounds, disease, and malnutrition. In some cases, veterinary intervention becomes critical for survival.

Wildlife veterinarians and conservation teams work together to monitor populations, safely immobilise animals for treatment or tracking, and respond to emergencies in the field, playing a key role in protecting these species.

Protecting big cats means protecting entire ecosystems!!
