There are moments in motherhood that everyone expects you to celebrate — first steps, first words, that precious first “mama.” For me, those milestones didn’t come with timelines.
When you’re a special needs mom, milestones arrive with waiting, questions, and uncertainty. For years, I grieved a single word most mothers hear without thinking: “Ma.”
That tiny sound carried the weight of the world. It represented hope, connection, and the possibility of communication with my child. Every day was spent encouraging, guiding, and waiting patiently.
We tried everything — speech therapy, sign language, visual cues, and playful routines — celebrating even the smallest responses and tiny gestures. Each effort, however minor, was a step toward that moment.
Finally, after years of dedication and love, that first “Ma” came. It was a triumph of perseverance, patience, and hope.
