How it all started! On October 6, 1995 a Siamese-mix cat arrived at Bonanza Cat Hospital for evaluation after a volunteer feeding strays at a trailer park noticed she had a severe head tilt. Once her lab results showed she was FIV positive (Feline AIDS), this poor kitty was deemed un-adoptable. She would need a lifetime of medical care to assure her immune system would remain stable. Bonanza Cat Hospital became her new home and she was named Poppy. She delighted in standing on our examining room tables and taking swipes at the staff whenever they passed through. She also began to develop quite a reputation as our "official greeter", casually sauntering out to the clinic waiting room with her tilted head and crooked mouth to "honor" a few lucky people by allowing them to pet her. Several of our clients began donating money towards her care and the cost of her medical needs. Sadly Poppy passed away September 20, 2001. We all loved her dearly and miss her every day. She gave so much enjoyment to so many. In Poppy's honor, the Poppy Foundation was created. Today, the Poppy Foundation provides homes and long term care for special needs, chronically ill, abused and abandoned cats. The Poppy Foundation is a non-profit, volunteer run organization and therefore relies solely on donations to help pay for medical expenses, food, and additional pet care. They are typically not adoptable and are with us for the remainder of their lives. We are dedicated to them all and will love and care for them as long as they roam our halls. Our current visiting hours are Monday and Tuesday from 3:30 - 5pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 2pm. We are currently located at 3915 Helen Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89131.

She is just a little nervous. 💜

Franny was found as a stray in a local colony, struggling to survive. She was painfully underweight and starving, and after receiving medical treatment it became apparent very quickly that it was because severe dental disease had made eating difficult and painful.

After receiving the veterinary care she desperately needed, including a full-mouth extraction, Franny can finally eat comfortably again.

Now she’s facing a different challenge: learning that she’s safe.

Everything about sanctuary life is new and overwhelming. New sounds. New smells. New people. New cats! Right now, Franny spends much of her time tucked safely in her cubby, quietly observing the world around her. And that’s okay.

Healing isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like a frightened cat peeking out from her safe space. Sometimes it looks like staying a little less hidden than the day before.

We’re giving Franny what every scared cat deserves: patience, kindness, and time to adjust at her own pace.

Franny’s journey is also a reminder of how important dental health is for cats. They are masters at hiding pain, and dental disease can often go unnoticed until it becomes severe. Thankfully, Franny received the care she needed and can now eat comfortably again.

For now, we’ll celebrate the small victories and let Franny move at the speed of trust. ❤️
