Craftsmanship & Detail | We love when customers come to use with minor or extreme alterations so their piece fits their trophy room exactly how they want.

In the Field Part Four | Velvet Prep 101

Taking an early season buck? Do this immediately after recovery.

Velvet rots fast in heat, it has blood flowing through it while the animal is alive. As soon as the animal is harvested, the blood flow stops.

Depending on where you’re at, backpack hunting at camp or 100 yards from your truck, get the head out of direct sunlight. Do not hang the deer by it’s antlers. Get them to cold storage or to CS Taxidermy as quickly as possible.

After harvest allow time for velvet rack to cool off before placing it into a bag, IF you need to store in the freezer for any amount of time. DO NOT trap heat into a bag.

Once cooled, if you can’t reach our studio, double bag rack, lay flat, tips of antlers pointing up.

Know when coming to our shop, we will use the freeze drying process, which produces a more superior product. Visit cstaxidermyin.org for pricing.

Share with your buddies that are hitting early season bow states!

In the Field Part Three | 🥶 If you're on the fence or can't make it to CS Taxidermy promptly and need to throw your deer in the freezer:

Once deer is caped and skin has had an ample amount of time to cool out, via a cold concrete floor or a shaded area (out of the sun), place skin to skin.

Roll hide from the back end forward.

Place whole hide into a large trash bag, making sure ears are fully covered by the bag.

Then double bag to prevent freezer burn! 🥶

Field Care Part Two | 🚨The Cape Line You're Cutting Wrong 🚨

Save this photo and then cut along the red line. Extra cuts cost extra 💸

CST accepts a full hide and can provide caping services.

If you follow this field care series, you shouldn't need one but CS Taxidermy does have extra capes for sale.

Field Care Part One | 🚨 Don't Ruin Your Trophy Before It Hits Our Studio 🚨
Here are the top three mistakes we see year to year.
1. Dragging your whitetail for long periods of time (we understand they don't always run toward the tailgate) Keep in mind once dressed out, keep the shoulders up high if you need to drag for any period of time.

2. When skinning your animal give us extra skin. Always cut well behind the front shoulders.

3. Keep it cool. 🥶 - get the hide out of direct sunlight as well as time to air out before shoving a warm skin into a bag, which locks in heat. Allow a two to three hour cool down time. Then roll up the skin, double bag and place into a freezer and/or in a cooler on top of ice. Never under water.
