This is why teaching your dog how to walk properly on leash through neighborhoods usually isn’t the ideal first step.
For a lot of dogs, neighborhoods are full of overwhelming stimulation: cars, barking dogs, people, scents, movement, pressure on the leash, and constant environmental changes. Trying to teach leash skills there before the dog understands engagement, communication, and neutrality can set both the dog and handler up for frustration.
We want to build clarity in simpler environments first, then slowly layer in distractions as the dog becomes more confident and predictable. Proper training is progressive, not rushed.
