ENGLISH vs. AMERICAN LABRADORS — WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Over generations, selective breeding for different purposes has created some noticeable differences in both appearance and temperament. Same breed. Two noticeably different looks!
“ENGLISH” LABRADORS are typically known for their stockier, more substantial build. Most often found in the show arena. They tend to have broader heads, shorter legs, thicker necks, deeper chests, and that adorable blocky appearance so many people love!
They also tend to have a more laid-back temperament, although they still enjoy swimming, retrieving, playing, and being active with their families.
“AMERICAN LABRADORS”
American Labs are generally taller, leaner, and more athletic in appearance. They typically have longer legs, narrower heads, and a more streamlined build.
Bred primarily for hunting and fieldwork, these Labs often have higher energy levels, strong retrieving instincts, and impressive endurance. They typically thrive with plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation.
SO, WHICH ONE IS BETTER?
Neither! They’re simply different expressions of the same wonderful breed. Both can make exceptional family companions, and both share the intelligence, loyalty, affection, and eagerness to please that have made Labradors one of America’s most beloved breeds.
It’s also important to remember that these aren’t two separate breeds, and not every Labrador fits neatly into one category. Individual personalities, genetics, training, and upbringing all play important roles!
At SKI LABRADORS, we have a special love for the traditional English-style Labrador. We appreciate their beautiful, substantial build, affectionate personalities, and the wonderful companionship they bring to family life. Our goal is to raise healthy, well-socialized puppies with the temperament to become cherished members of their families.
NOW WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
