Imagine if every time you did a puzzle, it was the exact same puzzle. Eventually you’d stop thinking about it because you already know where every piece goes 🧩

Dogs are the same way. If every retrieve happens the same way and same place, they’re solving the same problem over and over. One of my favorite ways to mix things up is nighttime retrieves. Instead of relying on their eyes to watch where the retrieve lands, they have to isr their nose to track it 🧐

A dog’s nose is one of the primary ways they experience the world. Changing the environment and making retrieves less predictable encourages problem solving and provides valuable mental stimulation. Small changes to playtime can make a big difference 😁

Your dog can’t heel if they aren’t paying attention to you 👍🏼

One of the fastest ways to build that engagement is by starting your heel work walking backward ⏪

When you walk backward, your dog naturally wants to turn toward you. Instead of staring at the environment, they begin making eye contact and following your movement 👌🏼

Once your dog is engaged, that’s when you should transition into walking forward. If they disconnect, don’t pull them along or get pulled along by them ❌

Call them back into you, then re-initiate the heel. Every repetition teaches your dog that heel isn’t just about being beside your leg. It’s about staying connected to you ⛓️

The goal has always been creating a dog you can trust anywhere 🐺🌎

Could your puppy have more freedom than they’re ready for? 🤔

Puppies aren’t born knowing how to relax inside. Often, we give them too much freedom before they’ve learned that skill, they’ll find ways to occupy themselves. Sometimes that’s harmless. Sometimes it turns into jumping, chewing, barking, accidents inside, and other habits that are easier to prevent than fix

Teaching a puppy to decompress is one of the best investments of your time that you can make. The fewer unwanted behaviors they practice now, the more freedom they’ll earn as they mature 👍🏼

Louie struggled to settle inside and was still having accidents when he first came to BRK9. Now we’re teaching him a different expectation. After training and play, coming inside means it’s time to relax
