Official Statement Supporting Lafayette’s Action Against Crime-Plagued Properties
The Police Association of Lafayette, Local 905, strongly supports Mayor-President Monique Boulet and her administration’s decisive actions to address properties that have long been associated with criminal activity, blight, and unsafe living conditions in our community.
For far too long, these locations have placed an extraordinary burden on law enforcement resources while exposing nearby residents, businesses, and vulnerable individuals to dangerous conditions. Addressing these longstanding problems requires leadership, cooperation, and the willingness to make difficult decisions. We commend Mayor-President Boulet and her administration for taking those steps.
During the recent press conference, Corporal Cullen Brooks highlighted some of the disturbing criminal activity associated with these properties, including an incident in which a mother was shot in the head in front of her children. These incidents remind us that the consequences of allowing criminal activity to persist extend far beyond police reports and statistics. They affect real people, families, and entire neighborhoods.
We particularly want to recognize the outstanding work of the Lafayette Police Department’s Tactical Narcotics Team, which has been the tip of the spear in these investigations. Their dedication, persistence, and investigative efforts have been instrumental in bringing these issues forward. We also recognize Chief Paul Trouard for his leadership and unwavering support of the officers working to address these problems.
These actions will have a meaningful impact on the daily operations of the Lafayette Police Department. Reducing the repeated calls for service generated by these properties will help relieve the workload of patrol officers, allowing them to spend more time conducting proactive patrols, preventing crime, and serving other areas of our community.
We also commend District Attorney Don Landry and his office for their partnership in this effort. The cooperation between the District Attorney’s Office, the Police Department, and Mayor-President Boulet’s administration demonstrates what can be accomplished when our community’s leaders work together toward a common goal.
We extend our appreciation to the Lafayette City Council, particularly Council Chairman Kenneth Boudreaux, for their support and commitment to improving public safety. Chairman Boudreaux’s remarks during the press conference emphasized an important point: this administration, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Police Department demonstrated the courage to act using the laws already available to them. As he stated, “This is the beginning, not the end.”
We recognize that these properties also house some of Lafayette’s most vulnerable residents and that housing insecurity remains a serious challenge. We believe our elected officials and community partners will continue working toward meaningful solutions for those experiencing a housing crisis. However, the existence of those challenges cannot mean that criminal activity, dangerous living conditions, and the neglect of property owners must be tolerated.
Mayor-President Boulet made this responsibility clear when she stated that Lafayette must hold property owners accountable when their properties become centers of crime, blight, and unsafe living conditions. We agree.
The residents of these neighborhoods deserve the same level of safety, security, and quality of life as every other neighborhood in Lafayette. We believe these actions represent an important step toward delivering that promise, not only for the families living near these properties but for our entire city.
The Police Association of Lafayette applauds Mayor-President Boulet, Chief Paul Trouard, District Attorney Don Landry, the Lafayette City Council, and the dedicated officers whose work made these actions possible.
We stand firmly behind these efforts and support continued decisive action to address criminal activity, hold negligent property owners accountable, and improve the quality of life throughout Lafayette.
