If you've ever wondered whether a $5, $10, or $25 donation matters, I can tell you that it does. Those small gifts become bloodwork, medications, diagnostic testing, follow-up appointments, and treatment plans.

I'll be honest: we're feeling the weight of these veterinary expenses right now, and we could really use your help.

Veterinary care is expensive. Diagnostics are expensive. Medications are expensive. And the animals who need help the most are rarely the easy, inexpensive cases.

This week, Gray Muzzle Society welcomed two cats who need significant medical care.

Willow is only 5 years old and suffers from chronic dermatitis. She is uncomfortable, itchy, and needs diagnostics and treatment trials to help us determine the cause and find relief.

Frankie is a 10-year-old calico with suspected inflammatory bowel disease and other medical concerns that require further investigation. Right now, we have more questions than answers, and those answers come with veterinary appointments, lab work, and diagnostics.

These are exactly the kinds of animals Gray Muzzle Society was created to help.

Animals who aren't "easy."

Animals who need someone willing to invest the time, money, and effort to figure out what's wrong.

Animals who deserve a chance, even when their medical records are complicated.

Every time we take in a cat like Willow or Frankie, we're making a promise: that we will do everything we can to give them comfort, answers, and a path forward.

Today, we're asking for your help keeping that promise.

Every life we say yes to comes with a story — and a cost. Lately, that commitment has been stretching us thin financially, but dogs in need don’t stop needing help when times get hard.

Meet two of our newest rescues:

Monet is a toy poodle/shih tzu mix weighing just around 4 pounds. She has EPI, a metabolic disorder that requires a special diet with supplements to keep her healthy. At only 3 years old, Monet has a long life ahead of her and a whole lot of love to give.

Beowulf is a 10-year-old Great Pyrenees weighing 155 pounds. He came to us overweight and struggling with arthritis. His food alone is costly, and his medications and joint care add up quickly — but we already see hope returning to his eyes. He deserves comfort, dignity, and the chance to feel good again. He is one of the gentlest souls we've ever met and gets along beautifully with all animals and people.

Despite their enormous size difference, Monet and Beowulf arrived needing the very same thing: compassion, medical care, and a safe place to land. These two could fit beautifully into the right families someday. We believe their futures are bright. But rescue only works when the community carries it together.

Ever thought about fostering? Now is the time.

At Gray Muzzle Sanctuary, we take in the pets others pass by. Pets with special needs, seniors, and those who’ve run out of options need your help.

A lot of people hesitate to help animals like these because of the cost, but with fostering, you get all the love and impact without the financial burden.

We cover food and vet care. You just provide a safe place and some kindness.

We’re also working to grow our foster base because more fosters means we qualify for grants that help us save even more lives. So by opening your home, you’re helping more than just one animal.

One of the surest signs of spring? Baby chicks for sale at the feed store.
And with that, it's time for our annual reminder: many of those chicks will grow up to be roosters.
Just this month, nine roosters have joined the bachelor flock at Molly's Menagerie, our farm animal rescue. They're the lucky ones. Because roosters aren't permitted in most cities, and placement options are scarce, many shelters have no choice but to euthanize them.
Roosters are remarkably intelligent animals. They use distinct vocalizations to warn their flock of specific threats, problem-solve, and even show empathy. They're not just noise. They're individuals.
If backyard chickens are on your radar this spring, please have a plan for the roosters before you bring chicks home. Sexing chicks isn't foolproof, and "straight run" means you're rolling the dice.

It’s been a few weeks since we wrapped up Operation Amazonas in the Colombian Amazon, and we’re finally sitting down to share more of the story. We had hoped to post updates along the way, but we are better at helping animals than we are at social media.

A huge thank you to Allison Mae Photography for documenting the journey so beautifully. Her photos capture everything we felt out there. The dogs and cats we met stole our hearts. Some broke them, not because they were unloved, but because access to veterinary care is so limited in these remote communities. We did everything we could to make life better for animals who may never see a veterinarian again. Our team treated parasites, provided wound care, distributed medications, and shared basic knowledge so families can continue caring for their animals. We’ve already heard that the experience was meaningful and that communities feel better equipped to care for their animals.

This trip was funded by participants and by donations specifically raised for Operation Amazonas. Funds used for this project do not detract from our work in Colorado.

Our work there is not finished. We hope to continue providing parasite treatment, basic support, and food to these communities where accessing care can require hours of travel by boat, while continuing our mission to keep pets with the families who love them here in Colorado.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our family at Chunaki Ecolodges for welcoming Gray Muzzle Society into their home in the Colombian Amazon. We originally chose Chunaki because of Martin’s vision for protecting and conserving the Amazon ecosystem while supporting the surrounding communities. That vision aligned deeply with our own mission, and what began last year as a place to stay quickly became a partnership built on guidance, trust, and friendship.

During our time in the Amazon, we worked in three surrounding communities, two in Colombia and one just across the river in Peru. With the help of local guides, families, and friends connected to Chunaki, we were able to meet animals and caretakers who welcomed us with incredible warmth and trust.

Our team provided treatment for parasitic infections, wound care, and basic veterinary education. These are simple services in many places, but in remote Amazon communities access to veterinary care can require hours of travel by boat, making even routine treatment extremely difficult, if not impossible.

None of this work would be possible without the trust and partnership of the people who live in these communities. We are deeply grateful to be welcomed into their homes and villages, and to work alongside the team at Chunaki whose care for the land, animals, and people mirrors our own. The success of this mission came from that shared spirit and collaboration.

After our time at Chunaki, we continued our work in Leticia where we connected with local Colombian veterinarians. This collaboration gives us hope that future missions can expand to include larger outreach efforts and sterilization services while building stronger connections with local veterinary professionals who can help provide ongoing care.

The people of the Amazon care deeply for their animals and their land. What they often lack is not compassion or commitment, but access to resources and funding. Our hope is to help bridge that gap and continue expanding our mission so that the Amazon, its people, pets, and environment are included in the work we do.

Thank you to Martin, Gabi, Juanes, and the entire Chunaki family for opening your doors and sharing your community with us. We are incredibly grateful and look forward to returning to continue this work together.

We want to take a moment to give our deepest thanks to , our photographer and longtime volunteer with GMS. 

Allison has been with us since the very beginning. From our very first rescue dog to beautifully documenting reptiles available for adoption (a challenge she took on with curiosity and care, even though it was new to her). We constantly receive compliments on the photos she creates, and it’s easy to see why. Her talent lies not just in photography, but in connection. Capturing animals and people as they truly are, especially in natural spaces.

On this trip, Allison traveled with us to Colombia, documenting our mission across rural Amazon communities in both Colombia and Peru. Out here, her work has been just as essential as Dr. Howard and the veterinary team. Through her lens, she provides witness for our donors and supporters. She is showing the reality of this work: the mud, the heat, the bugs, the long days, and the profound moments of care and trust that happen far from easy access to veterinary services.

Having a dedicated photographer allows us to stay fully present and focused on the work, while also ensuring that what happens here doesn’t disappear once we leave. Her images give us more than memories, they give accountability, transparency, and story. They help bridge the distance between these remote communities and the people who make this work possible.

We are incredibly fortunate to have crossed paths with Allison, and endlessly grateful for her generosity, her eye, her resilience, and her heart. Thank you for walking, and sweating, alongside us. Thank you for helping the world see what compassion looks like in action. We can't wait to share the images and stories she has captured with you!

There are veterinarians… and then there’s Dr. Howard.
For years, Dr. Howard has provided compassionate, steady, no-nonsense medical care to every animal who has come through the doors of Gray Muzzle Society. Senior dogs with complicated histories. Farm animals with mystery ailments. The ones who needed extra time, extra diagnostics, extra patience. He never flinched.
Earlier this year, he sold his clinic and officially retired. Most people would call that the finish line.
Dr. Howard apparently saw it as a pivot point.
Instead of easing into retirement, he packed his bags and traveled with us into rural communities in the Colombian and Peruvian Amazon to provide free veterinary care where access is scarce and need is high. With limited equipment and even fewer luxuries, he helped us treat severe skin infections, heavy parasite loads, untreated wounds, and animals who had clearly been uncomfortable for far too long. No complaints. No ego. Just skill, focus, and heart.
And because showing up wasn’t enough, he also donated several months’ worth of preventative medications for the animals we treated — ensuring that the care didn’t stop when we boarded the boat home.
This is what service looks like.
This is what leadership looks like.
This is what retirement apparently looks like when you’re built different.
Dr. Howard, you’ve given your career to animals and somehow you’re still giving. We are deeply grateful.
