🐍 A little copperhead awareness…
Last night took a quick turn and was definitely not the kind of night any dog owner wants to have.
Around 8pm, two of the dogs were bitten by a copperhead in the backyard. I immediately identified the snake and got both dogs to BluePearl Pet Hospital, where they were treated throughout the night.
Both received pain medication, bloodwork, and anti-venom, along with antibiotics, and thankfully I was able to bring them home around 4am. ❤️
Honey was struck in the lip near her nose and Mango was unfortunately struck in the eye and will need to see a veterinary ophthalmologist, so we’re still keeping a very close eye on both of them and hoping for a good outcome.
I wanted to share this because copperheads are very real in our area, and a snake encounter can happen incredibly quickly—even in your own backyard. I certainly never expected to have two dogs bitten in the same night.
Thankfully, I was able to get them treated quickly, and they are now home resting and recovering. I’m going to be taking another look around the yard and making some additional changes to hopefully reduce the chances of another encounter even on top of what’s already been done.
For fellow dog owners, especially those living in areas where venomous snakes are common: know what snakes are in your area, be mindful of areas where they may hide, and keep your emergency vet information readily available. If you suspect your dog has been bitten, don’t wait to see what happens—contact your veterinarian or emergency hospital right away.
I’m very thankful to the team at Blue Pearl Pet Hospital for taking care of my babies through the night. ❤️🐾
Definitely not the update I expected to make, but hopefully sharing my experience can help another dog owner be a little more prepared.
