🐾 Play is serious business.
😜Okay… maybe not that serious. There should still be zoomies. 😂
When your dog is playing, they aren't “just fooling around.” They're practicing LIFE.
From puppyhood through their golden years, play gives dogs opportunities to learn, explore, problem-solve, communicate, make choices, build confidence, and strengthen their bond with us.
🏐 Puppies learn through play.
A game of tug can teach self-control and appropriate play.
A game of fetch can teach coming back and giving something up.
Hide-and-seek can encourage searching and using that amazing canine nose.
Playing with appropriate dog friends can help puppies learn canine communication and social skills.
And here's the really fun part:
🐶🎓Dogs don't graduate from play school. They continue learning their entire lives!!
Adults still need opportunities to sniff, search, chase, tug, solve puzzles, learn tricks, explore new things, and simply have fun. Play can provide an outlet for natural behaviors while giving us opportunities to teach useful life skills along the way.
And our seniors? Absolutely keep them playing! 🥰
For older dogs, play and enrichment can provide valuable mental stimulation and social interaction. Veterinary guidance recommends environmental enrichment including physical and mental activities to help maintain cognitive function and, in dogs experiencing cognitive dysfunction, to help slow decline.
That doesn't mean a squeaky toy is a magic cure for “doggy dementia.” 😉
But keeping an aging brain engaged, giving an older dog appropriate things to explore and figure out, engaging with them through new experiences, and adapting activities to their physical abilities are all meaningful ways to support their quality of life.
So don't wait for your dog to be “old enough” for enrichment.
They start learning on Day One and the lessons can last a lifetime.
Puppy? Play.
Adult? Play.
Senior?
PLEASE PLAY. 🐾💜
The goal isn't to make every game exhausting.
The goal is to make life interesting, rewarding, and fun.
Because sometimes the best teacher in the room has four paws, a wagging tail, and absolutely no idea where they left their ball. 😂🤔
