Allergy season means one thing around here: a whole lot of itchy ears and ear infections. The good news? Regular at-home cleaning makes a huge difference.

Here's our go-to method: soak a cotton ball completely in ear solution, tuck it into the ear, and gently squish until you hear that squelching sound - that's how you know it's actually getting into the canal. No need to go deep or use a Q-tip unless there's visible discharge. Wipe the outside, then let them shake it out - that's what dislodges the buildup from deep inside.

If your dog swims or has recurring issues, do this once a week (or after every swim). But if you ever see ulcerations, skip the DIY and bring them in. 💜

Meet Pappy (29 years young) and Norton (36 years young, willed to Dr. G) - two of our resident lobby birds getting some well-earned outdoor time today.

Sunshine helps birds break down essential vitamins, and it works hand-in-hand with their skin and natural oils to actually support better digestion overall.

So if you don't see them in the lobby, check the patio - they're probably out here catching some rays. 🦜

This handsome guy was one of over 800 birds rescued from a hoarding case busted by Animal Services a few weeks ago - mostly ducks, but also pigeons, parrots, and a handful of roosters like Edwattles.

He's currently under our care, getting checked out and settled in so he can get a healthy start on the next chapter of his life.

Rescue cases like this remind us why we do what we do. Here's to a good start and a great family for Edwattles. 💜

A bad vet visit can traumatize a bird long-term - and we take that seriously. For new bird patients, we spend at least 10 minutes just observing before we ever try to touch them. Direct eye contact can feel predatory to a prey species, so we turn to the side, offer treats, and use fear-free techniques just like we do for dogs and cats.

We've got up to 10 different toweling techniques and multiple ways to weigh a bird - whatever it takes to keep the experience as low-stress as possible.

Being at the vet will never be zero stress. But we do everything we can to make it close. 💜

Boba is a young cockatiel with a history of night frights - nightmares that can cause a lot of frantic flapping in the dark. During one of these episodes, she broke a blood feather, and even though the bleeding stopped, it kept bothering her every time she preened.

Unlike regular feathers, blood feathers have their own blood supply while they're growing - making a broken one both painful and delicate to manage. We carefully removed it to stop the discomfort for good.

Sweet girl is doing so much better now. 💜

Allergies. Fleas. Ear infections. Foxtails. It's the same story every year in San Diego - but there's a lot you can do at home to cut down on the vet visits.

Bathe more often, wipe paws after outdoor time, wash bedding regularly, and stay on top of flea prevention (yes, even for indoor-only pets - fleas hitch a ride on YOU). After baths or swims, clean ears with an astringent cleaner to keep moisture from causing infections.

And keep an eye out for foxtails in every grassy field you pass.

A little home prevention goes a long way. 💜

Frida came to us from a farm animal sanctuary with a serious toe infection that unfortunately required amputation. Today she's back for a bandage change - and she's doing really well post-op.

Recovery isn't always glamorous, but seeing patients like Frida bounce back? That's the best part of this job. 💜
