Before any sedation, we run in-house bloodwork to make sure your pet's levels are safe for the procedure. Once it's spun down, our machines can test for CBCs, heartworm, tick-borne diseases, and FIV - often in about 15 minutes.

Chemistries tell us about liver function, kidney function, and electrolytes. Platelet levels tell us about clotting ability. Together, they give us the full picture of your pet's health.

That's why we recommend annual bloodwork - not just when something's wrong, but to build a baseline and track trends over time. Sometimes catching something early is what makes all the difference.

They're grass awns - and in San Diego, they're everywhere. Shaped like tiny arrows, they can go into your dog's nose, ears, eyes, mouth, or between the toes... and once they're in, they don't come back out.

Here's the tough truth: even if you see one go in, there's only about a 50% chance we'll find it with a standard exam. Sometimes they sneeze it out. Sometimes they don't. And in rare cases, they can migrate further than we'd like.

If symptoms persist, advanced imaging like a CT or MRI is often the better path forward.

Know the risk. Check your dog after every walk. 🐾

A client found these two kittens outside his job site - no mom, no littermates, just the two of them. Goopy eyes, goopy noses, underweight for their age. They're likely around 8 weeks old, but honestly, they're so small it's hard to say for sure.

Right now we're treating for possible respiratory infection with eye drops and antibiotics, while keeping close watch on the basics: eating, drinking, temperature, blood sugar. At this age, that's the whole ballgame.

We're even stepping in to help stimulate them after feedings - basically doing our best mother-cat impression. 🐱

Tiny patients, big care. Rooting for these two. 💜

Rusty is here boarding with us while his parents travel - and yes, we do offer medical boarding for our bird patients who need their meds administered on schedule.

Fresh food and water daily, a cozy setup, and even some veggies mom packed just for him. Every morning starts the same way here: medicating all our feathered guests before anything else.

Every animal that comes through our doors gets a name, a story, and a whole lot of love.

Meet Badguy. His owners thought he just got some shampoo in his eye during bath time - a red eye, nothing serious. Turns out it was glaucoma, and the pressure has been nearly impossible to control even with immediate treatment.

Unfortunately, this means the eye has to go.

We share this not to scare you, but to remind you: a red eye is never "just" a red eye. If something looks off, get it checked - early intervention can be the difference between saving an eye and losing one. 💜

This little guy has been through it - chronic sinus issues, treatment complications that led to kidney failure, and now we're checking his heart because his blood is coming back unusually thick.

So we're doing a full echocardiogram to either catch heart disease early or confirm he's in the clear and establish a healthy baseline.

Exotic pets deserve the same level of diagnostic care as any other patient - and that's exactly what they get here. 💙

Ruby the conure came in with a possible wing fracture, and her X-rays confirmed a break near her shoulder. She's now bandaged, confined to a flat cage (no perching for a bit!), and on a combo of anti-inflammatory and pain medication to keep her comfortable while she heals.

Recovery timelines vary bird to bird, so we'll be seeing her every 2-4 weeks to track her progress.

Did you know lovebirds are native to Central and South Africa? They come in a huge range of color morphs — the one in this video is a specific, gorgeous variation - and with proper care, they can live 10, 15, even upwards of that in years.

Small birds, big personalities, long-term commitment. Just another reason we love what we do. 🦜
