Did you know?

When puppies get overly overstimulated and start biting, it's easy for pet parents to perceive it as a matter of “bad manners,” but is that really what's going on?

If I got a dime every time a pup parent blamed “manners,” we would all be retired somewhere warm, probably funded entirely by misunderstood Labradors.

In reality, what is actually going on when puppies become overstimulated and start biting, is that there is a shift in their nervous system.

In a nutshell, in developing puppies, their inhibitory system largely associated with prefrontal cortical development is still immature and therefore not fully efficient. Due to this, they become easily overwhelmed by high arousal levels.

When excitement rises, their brain tilts heavily toward subcortical “action systems.” These are fast, ancient circuits designed for survival behaviors.

Can you judge a dog by its breed?

Multiple peer-reviewed studies (like the 2008 study referenced here) have found that breed and appearance are highly inaccurate predictors of behavior, including aggression.

Behavioral tendencies (such as friendliness or aggression) vary widely within the same breed -- even within the same litter. No single trait is exclusive to any specific type of dog.

Dogs are individuals.

Every dog's temperament is a complex blend of his or her environment, training, socialization, and lived experience.

And because every dog's lived experience is different, no two dogs will have the same temperament or disposition.

Science says you CANNOT judge a dog by its breed.

Veterinary associations, animal welfare groups, and animal control organizations believe you SHOULD NOT judge a dog by its breed or appearance.

Every dog, regardless of breed, deserves the chance to be seen and evaluated for the unique individual they are.

🐾 IS YOUR DOG WALKING THROUGH TOXINS EVERY DAY? 🌱☠️

Most pet parents worry about what's in their dog's food.

Far fewer think about what's on the grass beneath their feet.

Yet every spring and summer, millions of pounds of lawn chemicals are applied to residential yards, parks, athletic fields, golf courses, apartment complexes, and public green spaces. Many of these products contain herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and synthetic fertilizers that can pose risks to both pets and people.

What exactly are these chemicals?

🌿 HERBICIDES
Used to kill w**ds such as dandelions and clover. Common ingredients include glyphosate, 2,4-D, dicamba, and mecoprop.

🐜 PESTICIDES & INSECTICIDES
Designed to kill insects such as fleas, ticks, grubs, ants, and mosquitoes.

🍄 FUNGICIDES
Applied to prevent mold and fungal growth in turf.

🧪 SYNTHETIC FERTILIZERS
Used to create the lush, green lawns many homeowners desire.

The problem?

Dogs don't just walk on treated grass.
👇
They sniff it.
They lick it.
They roll in it.
They groom contaminated paws and fur.

This creates multiple opportunities for chemical exposure.

⚠️ POTENTIAL HEALTH CONCERNS

Short-term exposure may contribute to:
▪️ Skin irritation
▪️ Paw inflammation
▪️ Excessive licking
▪️ Eye irritation
▪️ Drooling
▪️ Vomiting
▪️ Diarrhea

Long-term or repeated exposure has been associated in some studies with increased risks of endocrine disruption, immune dysfunction, neurological effects, and certain cancers, including bladder cancer in susceptible breeds.

⏰ WHEN IS IT SAFE TO WALK ON TREATED LAWNS?

Unfortunately, there is no universal answer.

Many lawn care companies recommend waiting until the grass is completely dry, often 24-48 hours.

However, research has shown that some chemicals can remain detectable on grass, soil, and pet paws for days, or even weeks, after application.

Dry does NOT always mean gone.

🚩 AREAS OF CONCERN

✔️ Your own yard
✔️ Neighboring lawns
✔️ Apartment complexes
✔️ Public parks
✔️ Sports fields
✔️ Golf courses
✔️ Common walking routes

If you don't know whether an area has been treated recently, assume caution is warranted.

🐕 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AFTER WALKS?

One of the simplest habits you can adopt:

✅️ Wipe or rinse paws after walks.
✅️ Pay special attention after visiting parks or neighborhoods where lawn treatments may have been applied.
✅️ Prevent paw licking until paws are clean.
✅️ Consider wiping the lower legs and belly if your dog walked through wet grass.

🌎 SAFER ALTERNATIVES FOR YOUR OWN PROPERTY

Instead of routine chemical treatments, consider:

🌱 Manual w**d removal
🌱 Compost-based fertilizers
🌱 Natural soil amendments
🌱 Aeration and overseeding
🌱 Beneficial nematodes for pest control
🌱 Diverse ground covers instead of monoculture lawns

A healthy soil ecosystem often reduces the need for chemical intervention in the first place.

🚨 IF YOUR DOG HAS BEEN EXPOSED

1️⃣ Remove your dog from the area.
2️⃣ Rinse paws and affected fur thoroughly.
3️⃣ Prevent licking.
4️⃣ Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, lethargy, tremors, skin irritation, or unusual behavior.
5️⃣ Contact your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline if symptoms develop or if you know which product was involved.

Your dog's health isn't determined solely by what goes into the food bowl.

Environmental exposures matter too.

The grass beneath their paws may be one of the most overlooked sources of toxic burden in the modern world.
