Meet Ellie, one of the four co-owners of North Star K9! 💚💙

Bet you didn’t think your dog was going to learn how to run through a field OFF LEASH while their trainer was riding a horse, did you? 🐕🐎

That’s the kind of thing Ellie loves.

Ellie has a knack for looking at a dog and seeing what’s possible — sometimes before the owner even realizes it.

She’s particularly in her element with the drivey dogs. Border Collies. Heelers. High-energy working breeds. The dogs who wake up every morning with approximately 47 ideas about what they could be doing instead of whatever you had planned. 😂

Those dogs don’t necessarily need someone to make them less dog.

They need someone to help them learn how to channel all that energy while staying mentally connected to their person.

And that’s where Ellie shines.

She wants to tap into what makes a dog tick — their drive, their curiosity, their desire to work — and turn that into a relationship where the dog can move through the world with freedom while still knowing:

“We’re a team. I know where my person is, and I have some brain space left for them.”

Because the goal isn’t just:

“Look! My dog can do obedience!”

It’s:

“Look! My dog can go be a DOG and still choose to come back to me.”

That’s a pretty incredible thing.

Whether she’s working with a dog in a training field, exploring the outdoors, or doing something slightly ridiculous on horseback, Ellie loves helping dogs learn that being connected to their person doesn’t mean they have to stop being themselves.

So if you have one of those dogs who seems to be powered by a combination of caffeine, rocket fuel, and questionable decision-making…

Ellie might be your girl. 😂

If Ellie has helped you and your dog discover something you didn’t know was possible, tell us about it! What did she help your dog accomplish? What potential did she see in your dog?

We want to hear your Ellie stories! 💚💙

Meet Cheryl, one of the trainers behind North Star K9! 💚💙

Cheryl spent more than a decade in nursing before making the leap into professional dog training — and while she traded the scrubs for a leash, she definitely didn’t leave the “but WHY?” part of her brain behind.

She’s always curious about what’s happening underneath a dog’s behavior, why a particular training approach works, and — perhaps most importantly — how to explain it to the human holding the leash.

Cheryl wants her clients to understand the reasoning behind their training choices, because she believes that when we understand how our actions teach our dogs — intentionally or unintentionally — we have so much more power to shape the life we’re building together.

But there is one other very important thing you should know about Cheryl:

She WILL cuddle your dog!

(☝️Only if they are into it!!!)

Any dog. Any size.

Great Dane? Lap dog.
108-pound Golden Retriever? Lap dog.
Tiny Chihuahua? Obviously lap dog.

The laws of physics are merely suggestions. 😂

Her happy place is a cozy blanket, a cup of coffee, and a dog — or three — in her lap. In fact, she’s officially coined this sacred ritual:

☕🐕 Cheryl’s Coffee Cuddle Time™️ 🐕☕

There is an ever-rotating cast of cuddle companions, and somehow there is photographic evidence of approximately all of them.

But underneath all the cuddling and questionable definitions of “lap dog,” Cheryl is deeply passionate about helping people understand their dogs.

She especially loves working with adolescent, high-drive, impulsive, and under confident dogs — the ones who come with big feelings, big energy, and sometimes a very creative interpretation of the rules.

For Cheryl, good training isn’t just about getting a dog to do what you want.

It’s about understanding each other well enough to build a life together that actually works. 💚💙

If Cheryl has worked with you and your dog, tell us about it! What did she help you understand? What changed for you and your dog? Or — let’s be honest — did your dog become part of the rotating cast of Coffee Cuddle Time™️? 😂

Drop your stories below and give Cheryl some love! 👇

Meet Chloe, our captain and one of the four co-owners of North Star K9! 💚💙

Who do you call when your dog is 120 pounds of big feelings and questionable decision-making? Chloe.

Who do you call when you need roadside assistance, a problem solved, or someone to take care of business? Chloe.

Actually, pretty much any time something needs to GET DONE, you call Chloe. 😂

Chloe somehow has approximately 317 things going on at once… and wouldn’t have it any other way. She is always gonna TCOB (Take Care of Business)!

Usually found in tie-dye, crazy shorts, and a pair of big, no-nonsense boots, Chloe has a little bit of an Ace Ventura: Pet Detective energy — especially when all the animals seem to flock to her. 🐾

She has a special love for BIG dogs, and aggression cases are absolutely her bread and butter. The bigger, tougher, and more complicated the dog, the more she’s in her element.

Because when everyone else is looking at a big, spicy dog thinking, “Uhhh… what do we do with this guy?”

Chloe is probably thinking, “Oh, I love him! Big handsome boyyyyyyyy!” in her signature doggy-baby-talk voice. 😂

She’s the captain, the problem solver, the big-dog enthusiast, and the person you want in your corner when things get complicated.

Basically: Who do you call? Chloe. 💚💙

Have you worked with Chloe? Has Chloe saved your butt a time or two? Does your dog have Chloe to thank for having a bigger, more beautiful life than they could have had before?! Drop some love in the comments and tell us your favorite Chloe story! 👇

A few more moments from this week’s Pack Walk! 🐕💚💙

One of our favorite things about Pack Walks is getting to spend time with this incredible community of clients. We’re so grateful for the people who continue to show up, put in the work, and support each other along the way.

There’s something pretty special about watching our clients and their dogs grow together — and getting to share a few miles, some laughs, and a whole lot of dogs along the way. 🐾

We truly have the best crew. 💚💙

Meet Morgan, North Star K9’s resident sport-dog nerd! 🐕💨💚

If there’s a dog sport happening somewhere, Morgan probably knows about it.

Disc. Flyball. Agility. Herding.

And if there’s a way to turn training into a game? Even better.

Morgan is especially passionate about the Jay Jack approach of teaching dogs through PLAY — because she doesn’t just want to put an obedience Band-Aid over a behavior.

She wants to change what’s happening underneath it.

Instead of asking, “How do I stop my dog from doing this?” Morgan is often asking, “Why is my dog feeling this way, and how can we change that?”

And then comes the fun part:

“How can we make the dog WANT to engage with us instead?”

Because Morgan believes training should be something you and your dog actually enjoy doing together.

She also has a knack for taking concepts that can feel abstract — clarity, communication, reinforcement, timing — and turning them into something you can actually understand and use.

Because sometimes your dog isn’t being stubborn.

Sometimes you just haven’t been specific enough about what you’re asking.

And once you learn how to communicate more clearly, suddenly your dog goes:

“OH. THAT’S what you wanted.” 😂

That’s the kind of lightbulb moment Morgan lives for.

Whether you’re working toward a sport goal or simply trying to build a better relationship with your dog, Morgan wants you to learn how to communicate in a way that makes sense to BOTH of you.

Because good training isn’t just about getting a dog to do something. It’s about building a relationship where your dog understands you, wants to work with you, and thinks training is one of the best games in town.

And if you happen to discover a new dog sport obsession along the way?

Well… Morgan probably has some recommendations. 😂

If you’ve worked with Morgan, tell us about it! Did she help you see your dog differently, communicate more clearly, or discover the joy of training through play?

Drop your Morgan stories below and give our resident sport-dog nerd some love! 💚💙

Welcome, Crew, to Hybrid Training Camp!!

Crew is a handsome one-year-old Bernedoodle who’s here for a few little behavior tweaks this week! 🐶

This good boy is working on two big goals: keeping four paws on the floor instead of countersurfing and learning that walks are for strolling, not towing his people around! 😂

We’re excited to help Crew polish up his manners and send him home with some new skills! ✨🐾

Meet Lindsey, one of the four co-owners of North Star K9! 💚💙

She is known as your dog’s cool aunt, but she’s an especially cool teammate! 😎

She’s your dog’s adventure buddy, biggest cheerleader, and quite possibly the thrift queen of dog training.

Why buy something specifically for dog training when Lindsey can find a completely random object at a thrift store and turn it into a training tool?

Jazzercise steps for Place training?

Obviously. 😂

But Lindsey’s training is about much more than obedience. She wants your dog to be your best bud — to have fun with you, explore with you, learn with you, and actually want to engage with you.

Of course, that doesn’t mean they get to maul everyone they meet. 😂 Lindsey is pretty passionate about helping dogs learn how to be fun, confident members of the family without turning every greeting into a full-contact sport.

And when she’s not training dogs or thrifting for hidden treasures, Lindsey can be found attending YouTube University, currently holding a degree in How to Build a 10-Foot-Tall Fence and taking graduate classes in Uh Oh, We Have Mold — Now What? on her new property, aptly named Misfit Mountain. 🏔️

If Lindsey has worked with you and your dog, tell us about it! What did she teach you? Did she help your dog become your best adventure buddy? Or do you have a favorite Lindsey story?

Drop it in the comments and give our cool aunt some love! 💚💙

Noodle is officially a SUP Pup! 🐾🌊

After conditioning at home and a very important first swim lesson, Noodle finally joined his mom and trainer, Cheryl, for his first stand up paddle (SUP) board adventure at Mead’s Quarry!

Luckily, the quarry was quiet and calm, which made for the perfect first adventure. Noodle wasn’t anxious at all! Just very alert and soaking in this whole new experience. He even took an unexpected dip twice (not captured on camera 😂), but he didn’t panic either time and recovered beautifully.

Overall? A very successful first voyage for this little adventure dog. 💙

Want to see how he got here? Go back and watch Noodle’s paddle board conditioning and first swim lesson videos to see the training steps that came before this adventure!
