Recovery IS Progress

One reaction does not erase your progress.
One hard moment does not mean you’re back at square one.
What matters is what happens after.

Can your dog:
✔ Reconnect?
✔ Re-engage?
✔ Recover faster over time?
✔ Return to feeling safe enough to think again?
That recovery process matters. In fact…Recovery IS part of the training plan.

This is one of the reasons our Outdoor Learning Labs & Group Walks are designed the way they are.

Dog owners learn how to:
🐾 Support their dog around real-life distractions
🐾 Adjust distance before overwhelm happens
🐾 Build confidence without flooding
🐾 Strengthen teamwork in real environments

Because lasting success doesn’t come from forcing dogs through hard moments. It comes from helping them recover, regroup, and learn they can handle the world with support beside them.

“Do you know what Bike Butt feels like?” 🚲🍑

You know… that soreness you get after the first bike ride of the season when your body suddenly remembers muscles you haven’t used since fall? 😅

Well… dogs can experience the same thing with new fitness activities too.

Not from the bike seat, of course 😉
But from using their bodies in new ways, working different muscle groups, balancing differently, or doing “just a little too much” too fast.

Belle and I took our first bike ride of the season yesterday, and it was a great reminder that conditioning matters for BOTH ends of the leash. 🐾

When starting new fitness activities with your dog:
✔️ Start slow and build gradually
✔️ Use warm-up & cool-down routines
✔️ Balance activity with rest days
✔️ Keep sessions short and successful
✔️ Watch for fatigue or stiffness afterward
✔️ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate 💧

Fitness should build confidence and strength… not leave your dog feeling sore, overwhelmed, or overworked.

Sometimes the best training progress comes from doing LESS than you think you should today… so your dog can comfortably do MORE tomorrow. 💛

Your dog’s reaction is not proof that:
❌ they’re bad
❌ you failed
❌ the training isn’t working

A reaction is communication that tells us; This is too hard, we are too close and your dog has lost access to their thinking brain. That’s why becoming a Behavior Detective matters.

Instead of focusing only on stopping reactions, we start asking:
✔ What changed?
✔ What was too difficult?
✔ Where could my dog still THINK instead of react?

This is exactly why I created the new Crack the Play Code – Games Starter Pack .

The included 24 Hr Bowling Game helps dog owners:
🎯 Observe behavior differently
🎯 Discover the distance their dog needs
🎯 Learn through games instead of pressure
🎯 Build real-life skills with less overwhelm

Because the goal isn’t perfection. The goal is helping your dog succeed in this environment, around these distractions, in this moment of time.

Avoidance vs Purposeful Space

“Am I just avoiding the problem?” This is one of the biggest fears dog owners carry. But there’s a difference between avoiding growth forever…and creating purposeful space so learning can actually happen.

Purposeful distance helps dogs:
✔ Stay under threshold
✔ Practice better choices
✔ Build confidence
✔ Experience success instead of overwhelm

That’s not failure, that’s strategy!

Distance today does NOT mean distance forever. With thoughtful practice, positive experiences, and support, many dogs can gradually learn to handle more in real-life situations.

We Unlock the SAFE Keys to Success by meeting dogs where they are, not by flooding them with more than they can handle.

👇 Comment “SPACE” if you’d like more information on helping your dog succeed around distractions without overwhelm.

Why Distance Helps the Thinking Brain Stay Online

When distractions, triggers, pressure, or excitement get too close…the thinking brain starts going offline. That’s when we see barking, lunging, shutting down, ignoring cues and big emotional reactions. Not because your dog is stubborn, but because their nervous system is overwhelmed.

Distance helps create access to:
✔ Focus
✔ Learning
✔ Engagement
✔ Better choices
✔ Recovery

This is how we Crack the Code behind behavior;
We stop asking, “How do I stop the reaction?”
…and start asking, “What does my dog need to stay connected enough to learn?”

💬 Have you ever noticed your dog doing better with just a little more space? Share your experience in the comments.

Distance Is Not Failure!

Crossing the street... Leaving early... Creating more space... Skipping the crowded event…
None of that means you failed your dog.

Sometimes distance is exactly what allows your dog to stay connected to their thinking brain instead of slipping into survival mode. And that matters, because dogs learn best when they feel safe enough to think, process, and make better choices.

Distance is not “giving up,” it’s support with purpose.
Sometimes stepping back is exactly how we move forward. 💛
