A pleco may look small at the fish store, but many species grow much larger than expected and can quickly outgrow a 20-gallon aquarium. Larger plecos need more swimming space, hiding places, filtration, and waste-management capacity than a small tank can usually provide.

Some plecos also produce a lot of waste, which can lead to poor water quality and stress if the aquarium is undersized. Before bringing one home, research the exact species and adult size—not every pleco has the same care requirements.

A better fish home starts with choosing a species that fits the tank for its entire adult life. Let’s protect these amazing fish by researching first and rehoming responsibly when needed!
