🤎🐾 Meet Frank! 🐾🤎

This handsome little guy is an 8-week-old black & tan long-haired Mini Dachshund with a whole lot of cuteness packed into one tiny body! 🥹🐾

Frank is currently accepting applications for his new full-time staff… I mean, family. 😂 He’s looking for someone to spoil him rotten, let him steal their spot on the couch, and pretend they don’t notice when he’s running the entire household. 🐶🤎

Benefits of hiring Frank include unlimited cuddles, tiny puppy kisses, and a lifetime supply of reasons to be late because you couldn’t put him down. 🤣❤️

Just a normal day around here! 😂🐾❤️

Couches are for snuggling, blankets are for sharing, and apparently personal space doesn’t exist when you have dogs! 😂

Wouldn’t trade this kind of chaos for anything. ❤️🐶

🐾 BE HONEST… 😂

If your dog could talk, what would they say when they realize they’re going to the kennel?

🐶 “OH, WE’RE GOING THERE? I LOVE THAT PLACE!”

🐶 “OH NO… DON’T LEAVE ME. NOT AGAIN!” 😂

🐶 “DID YOU BRING MY FAVORITE BED? OH, AND DON’T FORGET THAT ONE TREAT I LOVE SO MUCH—THE ONE YOU GIVE ME WHEN I’M A GOOD BOY.” 🥹

🐶 “YOU OWE ME EXTRA TREATS NEXT WEEK.” 😏

🐶 “OKAY… I’LL BE FINE. BUT MAKE SURE YOU TELL JEN I NEED MY FOOD TWICE A DAY WITH THAT SAUCE STUFF ON TOP, A BELLY RUB BEFORE BED, AND DON’T FORGET MY SPECIAL SQUEAKY TOY.” 😂

Now we want to know… what would YOUR dog say? 🐾

👇 Tell us in the comments! I have a feeling some of you are going to have some very specific instructions. 😂

🇺🇸❤️ Happy Labor Day from Down Under Kennels! 🐾

This Labor Day, we want to take a moment to say thank you.

Thank you to the men and women who get up every day and work hard to keep our communities running — our farmers, tradesmen and women, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers, small business owners, military members, and everyone who works behind the scenes to make a difference.

And to those who have served and sacrificed for our country, we are especially grateful. 🇺🇸

Hard work isn’t always glamorous. Sometimes it’s long hours, dirty hands, early mornings, late nights, and putting everyone else’s needs before your own.

We see you. We appreciate you. And we thank you.

From our family and all the four-legged members of Down Under Kennels 🐶🐾 — wishing you and your family a safe, happy, and well-deserved Labor Day! 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

🐾 Why Are Westies White? There’s a Pretty Incredible Story Behind It…

Long before Westies became the adorable little white dogs we know today, they were working terriers in the Scottish Highlands, bred to hunt foxes, badgers and other vermin.

And their brilliant white coat has a fascinating history.

The traditional story traces the West Highland White Terrier back to Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch, a Scottish landowner and terrier breeder.

According to the story, one of Malcolm’s reddish-colored terriers was accidentally shot while out hunting because it was mistaken for a fox.

After that tragedy, Malcolm reportedly decided he wanted his hunting terriers to be white and easily visible against the landscape.

And he began selectively breeding for that white coat.

The result?

The little white terrier that eventually became known as the West Highland White Terrier — the Westie. 🤍

But here’s the part I love…

That adorable white coat wasn’t originally about looks.

It was meant to help keep the dog from being mistaken for the very animals it was hunting. 🦊

Today, we see a Westie and think cute, fluffy, little companion.

But underneath all that white fluff is a tough Scottish hunting terrier with generations of working-dog history behind it.

Pretty cool when you look at your Westie a little differently after learning that. ❤️🐾

🐾 The Incredible WWII Dachshunds Who Detected Land Mines

Bertra and Herman were two remarkable Dachshunds who served as mine-detection dogs during World War II.

Both dogs served in the European theater under the direction of their trainer and handler, Corporal Harold Deitch. Their work took them to Italy, where they were credited with helping uncover more than 600 land mines in battle zones.

Herman of Lindakin belonged to Corporal Deitch and was the son of champion show dog CH Leutnant v Marienlust.

CH Bertra v Hildesheim was owned by Mrs. Richard Pell, who loaned her to the Dogs for Defense program. Bertra was also a granddaughter of the famous Dachshund CH Feri-Flottenberg.

During WWII, Dogs for Defense helped provide dogs for the U.S. military’s wartime dog program. Dachshunds were among the breeds used, and their small size and excellent sense of smell made dogs like Bertra and Herman valuable for detecting mines.

After the war, Bertra, Herman and Corporal Deitch returned to the United States. In November 1945, the three participated in an obedience demonstration at the Dachshund Club of America’s Golden Anniversary show, where their wartime service was recognized. Historical accounts of the event reported that Bertra and Herman had been successfully used for mine detection in Italy.

So the next time someone says a Dachshund is just a little lap dog… 🐾

Remember that these little dogs once went to war and helped save lives by detecting deadly land mines.

Pretty incredible history for such a little dog. ❤️🇺🇸
