Harrah's Casino pup is safe after being seen wandering around, unapproachable around the casino area for the last week.
We were engaged to assist NKC AC to trap a pup that would not allow anyone close enough to hand-capture and was seen daily roaming the casino property.
After talking with employees, a feeding station and trap (not live) were deployed in a quiet wooded area behind the casino where she was often seen. She showed up on camera late that night but was too scared to enter the trap for they yummy food.
The next morning, I saw her in the parking lot. I was able to get her attention with food but despite every effort to hand-capture her she would not let close enough. I dropped a trap in the parking lot (not ideal) and tried to lead her to it with food. She loved my food, but was not brave enough to enter the trap. I spent a good hour working to build trust, played ball, tossed chicken, you name it. I could entertain her and keep in the same spot for a long time but not get close enough or get a slip lead near her or her inside the trap.
Early Saturday morning I received a call from a gas station clerk on Chouteau informing me she was in their parking lot eating trash. I quickly headed to the casino, hoping she was on her rounds back to the casino. I set the trap in the woods live and as I was leaving, she was spotted running inside the parking garage. I switched gears and was able to find her in the garage. I dropped a second trap in the garage and attempted to lure her to it, however again she was too scared of the trap.
I built enough trust to keep her engaged and decided it was time to get creative. I tossed her some chicken while I quickly dropped another trap but bungeed one side of it up and laid the other end of the door all the way down to create a tunnel. From there, I turned it into a game and a small amount of food inside as an effort to get her to duck her head inside the trap. Each time she did it I praised her and kept putting the food further back, would step away and then praise her again. Eventually, she went through the trap, and I left her a good size jackpot to praise her for being so brave. I repeated it a few times so she understood our new game. Then I walked her over the live 72-inch trap that was placed a few feet away and tossed the food in and walked away. She walked in without hesitation to play the game again and boom she was safely trapped. Woot Woot!
This poor girl had to be sedated to remove the hundreds of ticks but is safe at NKC Animal Shelter. If you know who this baby girl belongs to please call them and let them know. Not chipped.
