🦎 Let’s talk about tail dropping in crested geckos.

This is actually our second-ever tail drop here at Green Paws & Co. Our first happened due to a breeding incident, but this time was a reminder that sometimes these things happen unexpectedly.

We went to transfer this guy into a cup, and shortly after being placed inside, he dropped his tail. It happened so quickly, and honestly, we’re heartbroken. 💔 While we know tail dropping is a natural defense mechanism, it’s still hard to see happen to one of our own.

Although we’ve been in this hobby for 4+ years, things happen, and not everything goes as planned. We wanted to take this opportunity to share our experience and educate others about something that can happen when keeping crested geckos. No matter how long you’ve been in the hobby, there’s always something new to learn. 💚

If you didn’t know, crested geckos have the ability to drop their tails as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened or experience stress. This is called autotomy, a defensive behavior in which an animal voluntarily sheds a body part, such as its tail, to escape a perceived threat. While it can be surprising to witness, it’s a natural defense response.

Tail dropping can happen for a variety of reasons, including sudden fright, handling, or other stressful situations. However, sometimes it happens without an obvious trigger, even when we can’t identify exactly what caused it.

A tail drop can cause some bleeding, so it’s important to keep the gecko in a clean environment and monitor the area while it heals. Healing should take about 1-2 weeks. Persistent bleeding, swelling, discharge, or other signs of complications warrant a vet visit!!

Most importantly, a crested gecko without a tail can still live a perfectly happy, healthy life! They may lose some of their balance and climbing ability, but they can absolutely thrive without it.

While tail dropping isn’t something we ever want to see, it’s a good reminder that these little guys can surprise us, and understanding their behavior helps us give them the best care possible. 💚🐾

📦 SHIPPING PSA — PLEASE READ! 🦎

All of our live animal shipments are FEDEX HUB-TO-HUB ONLY. We do not offer residential delivery for live animals.

We completely understand that with the recent closing of some FedEx hubs, getting to your nearest hub may mean a longer drive. Trust us — we understand! 😅 We currently have to drive about 45 minutes ourselves just to drop off our geckos. However, the extra drive is something we’re willing to make because the safety of our animals comes first. 🫶🏼

But why do we require FedEx Ship Center pickup? 🧐

🦎 Temperature & weather protection:
Keeping a live animal at a temperature controlled FedEx location gives us more control over the shipping environment. We do not want a gecko sitting on a delivery truck, outside a customer’s home, or potentially being left on a doorstep in unsafe temperatures.

📦 Secure holding:
At the Ship Center, your gecko is held securely until you arrive. There’s no risk of a package being left unattended outside, stolen, exposed to the elements, or sitting somewhere we cannot control.

🚚 Fewer stops & less exposure:
Residential routes involve multiple stops, unloading, loading, and additional time in transit. Having the shipment held at the hub allows your gecko to remain in a controlled location until pickup.

⏰ Prompt pickup:
Once your gecko arrives, you’ll be able to pick them up directly from the Ship Center rather than waiting for a driver to complete an entire residential route. Most shipments are available for pick up as early as 7 am!

At the end of the day, we would rather inconvenience ourselves and our customers with an extra drive than take unnecessary risks with a live animal. 💚

We completely understand that this may not be the most convenient option for everyone, and we respect that. However, this is a firm requirement for all of our live animal shipments.

SHIP DAY IS FINALLY HERE!! 🥹📦🦎💚

After what feels like forever waiting for the weather to cooperate, we’re SO excited to finally be able to send two of our babies off to their new homes! 🥹💕

We’ve got TWO geckos headed out today, and we couldn’t be more excited for their new families to meet them! 🥰

Shipping reptiles is something we take very seriously here at Green Paws & Co LLC, so we’re always watching temperatures and conditions closely to make sure our babies can travel as safely and comfortably as possible. Their safety will always come before a shipping date. 🐾

But today… we finally get to say ✨safe travels✨ to two of our babies! 🥹🦎💚

Thank you to everyone who trusts us with their new scaly family members. It means SO much to us! 💚
