It's a wild horse that wasn't able to be touched.

During this session, Pat continues working with Petunia—one of 16 neglected mustangs—using games like the Village Game, timed relief, and pressure and release to make his ideas feel like her own.

Rather than forcing contact, Pat gives Petunia the choice to move away and the reward of relief when she chooses to stay. Slowly, she starts to find that being near Pat is safe. By the end of Petunia's journey, this once-untouchable mustang is able to safely interact with the whole team.

If you’ve ever been told that collection is just tucking your horse’s nose in and carrying his body, but knew deep down it’s way more than that... You’re right!

No bit in the world can control a horse's emotions or his body, so how do you achieve Natural Collection?

First connect to their heart, then their head, then their emotion, then their body’s will follow. Naturally.

We want our horses to be mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually collected.

Then you and your horse can have true unity and achieve something Pat calls Equus. 🏇

“Kick him to go.” 🐎

Many riders are taught that if a horse won’t move forward, the answer is simple: kick harder. But according to Pat Parelli, that approach often creates dull, unresponsive horses.

This year, Parelli Natural Horsemanship × Horse Illustrated are taking a closer look at five common horsemanship myths we’ve all heard — and maybe even believed.

In Myth #3, Pat explains why communication works better than force. Instead of a big kick, start with something lighter: smile, relax, and gently squeeze.

A helpful tip Pat learned early on? Turn your toes slightly out and squeeze rather than kick. If the horse doesn’t respond, follow up with rhythmic pressure instead of one big aid.

This approach keeps the horse more responsive and aware of subtle cues—while also helping with other movements, like backing up, where rhythmic pressure encourages the horse to pick up its feet.

“If you take off the bridle, you're left with the truth.”

That line hits different when you've watched it happen in front of you. There's nowhere to hide behind equipment. Just two beings who've decided to trust each other.

Alischa Wingenbach — one of our Parelli Professionals, all the way from Germany — sat on her horse Glubschi at Summer Camp and did something most riders wouldn't dare: no bridle, no reins, just her seat, her breath, her intention. And Glubschi followed her through the entire trail course like it was the easiest thing in the world.

It wasn't luck. It wasn't a trick for the camera. It is years — years — of foundation work, of psychology, of showing up for each other on the ground long before either of them ever got on. That's what was really carrying them through that course.

This is what natural horsemanship, done right, actually looks like — not control, but partnership. And if part of you has ever wondered what that kind of connection with your own horse could feel like... this is where it starts.

“Squeeze a fart out of them” 🐎💨 is what Ray Hunt told Pat (Yes he really did)

Would you rather ride a horse that responds to:

✨ A light squeeze
or
⚡ A strong kick?

The goal of good training is lighter and lighter communication.

Tell us where you and your horse are in that journey!

In this episode, Pat helps Grace understand why Bella bucks—and how bucking behavior is often a symptom of fear, tension, imbalance, or confusion, rather than disobedience.

By looking beyond the behavior itself, Pat demonstrates how natural horsemanship can address the root cause and help the horse feel calm and confident again. Rather than trying to "stop the buck," Pat focuses on communication, balance, and emotional control. Through clear groundwork and under-saddle exercises, Grace learns how to help Bella relax, respond softly, and regain trust in the rider.

This episode is especially helpful if you're dealing with:

🐴 A horse that bucks under saddle
🐴 Fear-based resistance or tension
🐴 Loss of confidence while riding
🐴 Riding problems linked to anxiety or imbalance
🐴 Bucking that appears unpredictable

Pat Parelli explains how understanding horse psychology, timing, and feel can turn a dangerous situation into a safe learning opportunity—for both horse and rider.

Did you find natural horsemanship after a problem of before? 👀

Most people only look for natural horsemanship when things go wrong —
when their horse won’t load, won’t stop, won’t listen.

But that’s not what it’s about.

It’s about communication, trust, and partnership — before the problems start.
Natural horsemanship isn’t a last resort.

It’s a way of being with every horse, every ride, every time. 🐎💛

We're deep into the Parelli Europe Tour now, and honestly... it's flying by. So many good moments like this one, so many "aha" faces in the crowd, so much laughter between sessions.

We're soaking up every last bit of it because we know it's almost over — and we're not ready to let it go just yet. 🐴✨

If the meanwhile, you can get your Stick Savvy better by this Technique! Pat Parelli tosses the Savvy Stick to his student like a true pro. A small detail, but it says a lot about horsemanship and how Parelli teaches natural horsemanship techniques.

This is a cool technique, but if you want actual communication with your horse, try out our free lessons “Discover Parelli for free” 👇
