💬 Finder's Message: "About a month ago, a beautiful black cat was dumped in our area. Based on his behavior and appearance, it was very clear that this was likely someone's hse cat who had been abandoned. There was also a possibility that the cat was pregnant.
I contacted the city because I was extremely concerned about this cat and wanted to make sure he received help. Unfortunately, I was initially told that there wasn't much they could do. I had to repeatedly plead, advocate, and fight for this cat to get assistance.
The situation was even more difficult because I live in an area where feeding animals is not permitted because it is private property. I couldn't simply continue feeding this cat myself, so I needed the city to help.
Eventually, after continuing to advocate for the cat, the shelter manager confirmed that it was okay for the cat to be helped, and the city agreed to take the cat in.
But this situation has left me with a much bigger question:
How is it possible that cats in need can be left without help?
There are cats throughout our area who appear to be unaltered, and there are also cats being TNR'd. I understand and support the importance of spaying and neutering to help control the population. However, TNR cannot simply be the end of the conversation.
I have seen situations where cats are TNR'd but there does not appear to be a consistent food source or someone responsible for making sure they are being fed afterward. These cats still need food, shelter, monitoring, and care—especially when they are sick, injured, or facing extreme weather.
And what happens when a cat is clearly a dumped hse cat? What happens when a cat is pregnant, sick, injured, or unable to survive outdoors?
What happens when residents aren't permitted to feed animals because they are on private property?
Who is responsible for helping these animals?
What has been especially upsetting to me is that when I express these concerns, I feel disregarded and, at times, mischaracterized as though speaking up for these animals is somehow the problem.
I am not trying to create conflict. I am not trying to attack individual workers, shelter staff, or volunteers. I am trying to advocate for animals that cannot advocate for themselves.
When I repeatedly see cats in need and ask questions about what can be done, I believe those concerns deserve to be heard rather than dismissed or misconstrued.
I understand that shelters, rescues, and municipalities have limited resources. I also understand that TNR is an important tool for managing community cat populations.
But there needs to be a larger plan for the welfare of these animals.
Residents should know where to turn when they find:
🐈 A dumped hse cat
🐈 A sick or injured cat
🐈 A potentially pregnant cat
🐈 An unaltered community cat
🐈 A TNR'd cat with no apparent food source
🐈 A cat experiencing a medical emergency
We shouldn't have to fight tooth and nail every time an animal needs help.
I am speaking up because I care. If my concerns are uncomfortable to hear, that does not make them any less worthy of being addressed.
I am asking for answers, accountability, better communication, and better resources for the cats in our community."
