A little update from Posh Paws! First, I want to say a big thank you to everyone who sent birthday wishes. I celebrated quietly on Saturday, and it was exactly what I needed. August has been a bit different for me. I've been taking time to heal from a back injury, which has slowed things down more than I would like. I've really missed my routines and all my Posh Paws pups. As we move into September and toward fall, I'm looking forward to cooler weather, fresh energy, and getting back to all of you . Truly, I want to say how deeply grateful I am for your patience, kindness, and support. I feel incredibly blessed to have such wonderful clients who support my small business and trust me with their beloved pups. Your dogs mean so much to me. Each one becomes family. Thank you for giving me the space to heal and for being such amazing clients. So grateful for each of you. Here's to a beautiful September and a cozy start to fall. With love, Ashley and Posh Paws.

SAME BEHAVIOR. DIFFERENT DOG. DIFFERENT REACTION.

A little dog growls.

“He’s sassy.”

A little dog barks and lunges at another dog.

“She thinks she’s ten feet tall.”

A little dog snaps because someone ignored every warning it gave.

“He’s just grumpy.”

Now put that exact same behavior in a 60-pound Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Shepherd, Mastiff or Doberman.

Suddenly the words change.

Aggressive. Dangerous. Vicious.

And THAT is a conversation worth having.

At MSGBR, we aren’t going to tell you breed doesn’t matter at all. Genetics matter. Size matters. Strength matters. A dog’s history, socialization, health, environment, experiences and training matter too.

But none of those things mean we should stop looking at the individual dog standing in front of us.

A growl is communication whether it comes from a Chihuahua or a Pit Bull.

Fear is fear.

Discomfort is discomfort.

Reactivity is reactivity.

And boundaries are boundaries.

The consequences CAN be different when a larger, stronger dog bites. That’s reality, and responsible rescue means acknowledging it.

But responsible dog ownership also means we shouldn’t laugh at warning signs from little dogs while immediately condemning bigger dogs for communicating the exact same thing.

Because here’s where that double standard hurts both dogs:

When we dismiss communication from small dogs, their boundaries get ignored.

When we automatically label communication from large dogs as aggression, their boundaries get punished.

Neither dog is being understood.

And for bully breeds, that distinction can literally mean the difference between being given an opportunity and being given a label they may never escape.

We don’t need to pretend every dog is the same to treat every dog fairly.

Learn canine body language.

Respect the growl.

Pay attention to fear.

Don’t force interactions.

Train the dog in front of you.

Manage responsibly.

And stop deciding who a dog is based solely on the shape of its head.

Judge the behavior. Understand the communication. Know the individual dog.

That’s how we do better for ALL of them.
