🐾 Momma Dog Red Flags After Whelping — A 10 Page Guide

Everyone watches the puppies after a litter is born, but momma needs just as much attention.❤️ A postpartum dam can go from simply looking tired to experiencing a veterinary emergency surprisingly fast.

This guide covers what’s normal, what’s not, and when it’s time to call your veterinarian, including vulvar discharge, SIPS, metritis, eclampsia, mastitis, postpartum hemorrhage, uterine prolapse, retained placenta or puppy, C-section recovery, and important behavior, milk supply, and litter side warning signs.

⚠️ Eclampsia deserves special attention around peak lactation, often 2–3 weeks after whelping.

Knowing your female’s normal postpartum baseline can make it much easier to recognize when something is wrong.
