Received a lot of calls today about dove hunting so I wanted to let everyone know we are booked for Opening Day! We still have Openings for our Sept 19th Dove Hunt! Don’t overlook our second hunt! We will have a second crop of millet as well as be cutting the seed heads of our Milo!

Had a bunch of messages and calls about our dove hunt for opening day! We are booked! I hate we can’t accommodate more people and I will look into some leased ground for next year but don’t sleep on our hunt on Sept 19th!

Horse Swamp Hunting Preserve isn’t a manicured field — it’s a quail property.

We’re not knocking preserves that do things differently, but at Horse Swamp, our goal is to create something that looks, feels and functions like real quail country.

That means rough ground — brush piles, briars, native grasses, forbs, legumes, pollinator plants, bare ground and thickets. It’s supposed to look like somewhere a bobwhite wants to live.

Prescribed fire, thinning, disking, mowing and other forms of disturbance help us maintain the early-successional habitat quail depend on. Combined with trapping and predator management, we’re working to give both our released birds and the wild quail we see throughout the year a better chance to survive and flourish.

We’re chasing that old-school quail-country look — diverse habitat that provides food, insects, nesting cover, escape cover and room for birds to move.

When you hunt Horse Swamp, we want you to experience more than released birds in a manicured field.
