Your dog doesn't need to know what they're doing yet. Neither do you.

That might be the most important thing to know before signing up for Intro to NASDA.

This is an intro workshop.
You aren't expected to arrive knowing the rules. Your dog isn't expected to have a trained alert. You don't need previous scent work experience.

We'll introduce each game.
Your dog will get to search.
You'll get to watch what they do.
And the judge will make the call.

If curiosity is the only qualification you and your dog have right now, you're exactly who this workshop was designed for.

Four games. Your dog gets to try every one.

🐾 Follow a trail to quarry.
🐾 Search an area for quarry.
🐾 Find a shed antler.
🐾 Find something that smells like you.

That's your morning at Intro to NASDA.
Every working team gets hands-on time with all four Level One games. We'll talk briefly about each one, then it's time to let the dogs work.

And if you're not ready to bring a dog? Grab an auditor spot. You'll get the same instruction, watch eight different dogs tackle the searches, and probably learn quite a bit from seeing how differently they solve the same problem.

Over the Garden Wall is open to all breeds and mixed breeds, with NASDA trials running October 30 through November 1 at Limestone Acres Dog Sports in Claremore.

Trailing & Locating gives them the chance to show you.

Your dog follows scent toward hidden quarry—but how they solve that trail is entirely their own.

Fast. Slow. Nose down. Nose up. A little zig here. A big zag there.
There isn't one picture of what a dog working scent is supposed to look like.

That’s one of the things we’ll explore at Intro to NASDA.
You don't need to teach your dog how to search before you come.

Bring the dog you have.

In Trailing & Locating, your dog gets a trail to follow.
In Urban Locating? Not so much.

The quarry is hidden somewhere within a defined search area, and your dog's job is to work the odor and find the source.

It’s another chance to see just how much information your dog can gather with their nose when we give them the opportunity to work.

At Intro to NASDA, we’ll introduce the game, talk about what Level One looks like, and then get out of the way and let the dogs try it.

Because sometimes the hardest part for the human is simply letting the dog work.

What happens when the thing your dog is searching for smells like you?
That’s Lost Item.
Instead of searching for quarry or a shed antler, your dog searches for an everyday object carrying their handler’s scent.
A sock. A wallet. A keychain.
For our Intro to NASDA workshop, working teams will bring an item from home and give their dogs a chance to figure out the rest.
No previous NASDA experience is required. You don't need to arrive with a polished search dog. That's kind of the point.

Find the antler. That’s it.

Shed Dog might be one of the easiest NASDA games to explain.

There’s a shed antler out there.
Your dog gets to find it.

They don’t have to retrieve it. They don't need a fancy trained indication. And you don’t need to tell the judge when your dog has found it.

You get to let your dog search and see what happens.

At Intro to NASDA, every working team will get a chance to try Shed Dog along with the other three Level One games.

If you’ve been curious about NASDA but weren’t sure where to start, this is your chance to start by simply letting your dog play.
