I’ll probably ruffle some feathers with this one, but preservation breeding means being willing to talk about practices that hurt the breed — even when they’re coming from popular programs.
It is incredibly discouraging to watch breeders with thousands upon thousands of followers be treated as the gold standard while some very questionable practices are happening right in plain sight.
🚩 Knowingly selling two littermate puppies to the same family because they “couldn’t pick just one.”
🚩 Producing 10+ litters a year while continuing to market yourself as a carefully planned preservation program.
🚩 Operating under multiple different kennel/program names online, then handing buyers a contract under yet another program name they’ve never heard of.
🚩 Claiming to breed European Dobermans to “preserve the European type,” while intentionally producing exaggerated, oversized, heavy-boned hyper-type dogs that do not reflect the actual European breed standard. Bigger heads, heavier bodies, and more extreme features do not automatically make a Doberman “more European.” Preservation should mean preserving the standard, structure, function, temperament, and health of the breed — not exaggerating it for a look that sells.
When we intentionally breed farther and farther toward extremes, we should also be asking what those extremes may mean for the structure, function, longevity, and already-fragile health of this breed.
These aren’t little things I would simply overlook. They are reasons to stop, ask questions, and dig deeper.
Ethical breeding is about more than producing beautiful puppies and building a massive social-media following. It’s about transparency, accountability, responsible placements, comprehensive health testing, thoughtful breeding decisions, and putting the future of the Doberman ahead of sales.
And transparency matters especially when something goes wrong. Ethical breeders are still human. Mistakes can happen. Complications happen. Unexpected situations happen. Being ethical doesn’t mean pretending your program is perfect — it means being honest when something happens, owning it, learning from it, and doing everything you can to make it right. Hiding mistakes to protect your reputation does absolutely nothing to protect this breed.
Popularity does not equal ethics.
Followers do not equal credibility.
Marketing does not equal preservation.
And “European” does not mean exaggerated.
Do your homework. Ask uncomfortable questions. And never be afraid to walk away when something doesn’t add up.
