🐾 “$3,500 for a puppy?! That’s INSANE!” 🐾
One of the biggest misconceptions about preservation breeding is that people see a $3,500 puppy, multiply that by the number of puppies in a litter, and immediately think:
“WOW. That breeder just made a fortune.”
Let me show you the part of that math people DON’T see.
Last year alone, I spent over $10,500 JUST on the parents.
That’s routine veterinary care, preventative care, quality nutrition, medications, genetic testing, OFA/PennHIP testing, advanced cardiac testing, and everything else that goes into maintaining and proving breeding-quality Dobermans.
And here’s the kicker:
That $10,500 doesn’t even include what I paid to PURCHASE the parents in the first place.
You’re paying $3,500 for one of my puppies. I paid MORE THAN THAT for the dogs that produced them. 😂
Ethically sourced, well-bred breeding prospects aren’t cheap either. Before I ever spend a dime health testing them, feeding them, raising them, training them or taking them to the vet, I’ve already invested thousands of dollars just to bring that prospect into my program.
And here’s something else people don’t realize: buying an expensive puppy doesn’t guarantee that puppy will ever become a breeding dog.
I can spend thousands on a beautiful prospect, raise that dog for two years, pour thousands more into them, complete their health testing…and if they don’t meet the standards I’ve set for my program?
They don’t get bred.
That’s part of preservation breeding too.
Then comes the litter.
I’ve already spent OVER $10,000 on this litter alone.
Pregnancy and veterinary care. Whelping supplies. Food. Supplements. Dewormers. Fecals. Vaccines. Medications. Microchips for every puppy. Tail docking. Ear cropping. Tail revisions when needed. Collars. Pens. Crates. Bedding. Potty-training supplies. Cleaning and disinfecting supplies. Constant nail trims on 11 sets of tiny velociraptor feet 😂 — and about a million other things nobody thinks about when they’re doing that “$3,500 × puppies” calculation.
We also had one puppy aspirate food and require emergency veterinary care. We did everything medically possible for him because when one of my puppies needs help, I’m not standing there with a calculator deciding whether they’re “worth” the vet bill.
We do what needs to be done. Even though it cost $5,000…
Unfortunately, despite everything, we still lost him. 💔
And then there’s the expense you can’t put on a receipt:
TIME.
For the first FOUR WEEKS, I slept on an air mattress IN the whelping room beside my puppies.
Not upstairs.
Not down the hall.
Right beside them.
And depending on their age, that room is kept roughly 80–90°F because very young puppies cannot regulate their body temperature effectively.
So yes, picture sleeping on an air mattress in an 80-something-degree room for weeks. 😂
Once they were old enough that I felt comfortable moving a little farther away, I finally upgraded my luxurious accommodations…
to the couch directly outside the whelping room. 😂👏
Because there is no clocking out from a litter.
It’s constant supervision.
Making sure everyone is nursing. Making sure nobody gets laid on. Weighing puppies and tracking growth. Supplemental feeding when necessary. Cleaning. Changing bedding. Laundry. Nail trims. Baths. Socialization. Introducing new surfaces, sounds, people and experiences. Beginning potty and crate training. Monitoring stools and appetites. Giving medications. Deworming. Vet appointments. Temperament evaluations. Structural evaluations. Individual attention.
Then repeat.
And repeat.
And repeat.
At 3 AM, these babies don’t care that you’re tired.
They need you, so you get up.
Then there’s one more little thing people conveniently forget when calculating what a breeder “made”:
TAXES. 😂
For our business and tax situation, we’re planning on roughly $900 PER PUPPY going toward taxes.
So that $3,500 puppy does NOT equal $3,500 of profit.
Not. Even. Close.
And after the taxes, the $10,000+ spent directly on this litter, the $10,500+ spent maintaining and health testing the parents last year, the original thousands spent purchasing those parents, emergency veterinary expenses, equipment, supplies and hundreds upon hundreds of hours of work…
Suddenly that imaginary pile of “puppy money” starts looking a whole lot different. 😂
When you buy an ethically bred puppy, you’re not just paying for the 8-14 weeks that puppy spent with its breeder.
You’re paying for everything that happened BEFORE that puppy ever existed.
You’re paying for carefully selected parents.
You’re paying for extensive health testing.
You’re paying for responsible breeding decisions.
You’re paying for proper veterinary care and nutrition.
You’re paying for microchips, vaccines, deworming and f***l testing.
You’re paying for early socialization and training.
You’re paying for emergency care when something goes wrong.
You’re paying for hundreds upon hundreds of hours of hands-on care.
And you’re paying for a breeder who will still answer the phone years after that puppy goes home.
Could someone put two dogs together, toss the puppies in a pen for eight weeks and sell them cheaply?
Absolutely.
But producing puppies and preservation breeding are NOT the same thing.
I don’t do this because puppies are “easy money.”
I do it because I absolutely love the Doberman and want to preserve what makes this breed incredible while striving to produce healthy, structurally sound, temperamentally stable dogs that are an asset to the breed.
So the next time someone says:
“$3,500 FOR A DOG?! Breeders must be making BANK!”
Remember…
You’re paying $3,500 for my puppy. I paid more than that just to buy its parent — before the health testing, before the vet bills, before the food, before the litter, and before a single sleepless night. 😂
Behind that puppy is a breeder who has spent tens of thousands of dollars, hasn’t slept normally in two months, has done enough laundry to qualify for commercial utility rates, knows entirely too much about the consistency of 11 different puppies’ p**p, has 11 sets of tiny nails that somehow need trimmed AGAIN, and is probably drinking the cup of coffee they made six hours ago. 😂☕️🐾
Ethical breeding isn’t expensive because we’re getting rich doing it.
It’s expensive because doing it RIGHT costs a hell of a lot of money, time, sleep, work, sacrifice and love. ❤️
