I was in Chicago this past weekend, and since The Catcade was closed for fall break, we decided to check out Chicago Cat Shelter & Cat Café’s cat cafe. Their cafe is unique because that’s where they house their FeLV+ kitties that are available for adoption. It’s such a nice little space for these special cats to live while they await their forever homes. If you are ever in Chicago, I highly recommend paying them a visit! (The two kittens were in a cage because they had just arrived in the cafe. They were recently spayed and are shy. They came out from hiding as soon as they heard the wand toy and had fun playing with it through the bars.)

I’m almost through the first leg of my crazy fall travel schedule. I visited my best friend from college in California a few weeks ago. We went to the Purdue/UCLA football game. It was a good game even though our Boilers didn’t win. (They finally got a win on Saturday though! 🚂) I was in Wisconsin last week for work. I’m heading to Vegas tonight for a long weekend to catch New Kids On The Block’s residency again before it ends! After that, I have a few weeks before my next trip. 🤪

If you saw my story last night, Peppermint is finally available for adoption! 🎉 Camphor is doing very well, but she’s still testing positive for panleuk (a whole month later! 🤷🏻‍♀️). They sent a sample out for further testing, so hopefully she’ll be cleared for adoption soon, too. 🤞🏼 I’ll be sure to share when she is. I’m so thankful they both made it. ❤️‍🩹

Camphor and Peppermint tested positive for panleukopenia. They are at IndyHumane receiving treatment and will hopefully make a full and speedy recovery. ❤️‍🩹

Panleuk is always my biggest fear when I bring new fosters home. I worry about it every single time. I won’t be able to foster kittens again for six months. 😔

I’ll be throwing away most everything they came into contact with aside from the pen, which will be thoroughly disinfected (many times). Some things could be disinfected and sanitized, but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk to try to salvage things that can be replaced.

The only thing I’m in need of right now is a gallon of Rescue disinfectant and a gallon of KennelSol disinfectant (KennelSol also kills parvovirus and is pH neutral so it won’t damage my floors). Both are on my Amazon wishlist.

Some pictures from the long weekend that still somehow felt too short.

I syringed Ge**er and KMR to the girls tonight so they would have something in their bellies. I ordered some Tiki Cat Baby Thrive, Tiki Cat Baby Weaning Purée, and Tiki Cat Baby Mousse from Petco that I’ll pick up after work tomorrow. Hoping that they’ll agree to trying those so I don’t have to force feed them.

These girls might just be the pickiest kittens I’ve ever fostered. They’ll seemingly like something one meal, and then be offended when I offer it again later. They will not touch kibble. I’ve offered four different kinds now. For wet food I’ve tried Royal Canin Babycat (wouldn’t even try it), Fancy Feast (hard pass), Weruva (sometimes they will pick at it), Sheba (ate it okay twice but now won’t touch it), Nulo (absolutely not), Ge**er (they ate almost an entire jar this morning but are completely uninterested this afternoon), Churu (loved it last night but turned their noses up to it today), and liquid KMR (they will sometimes drink a little bit of it but nowhere near enough to fill their bellies). My Tiki Thrive is expired. I ordered more weeks ago, but it still hasn’t shipped. I have a few other different wet foods on hand, so I will keep trying. At this rate, they will be nowhere near big enough for surgery and adoption when I have to return them next week. I need them to be like Dash and gain an ounce a day, but that feels like a pipe dream. 😩

On a positive note, they haven’t thrown up since yesterday. Their p**p is not great but would probably be better if they would eat a consistent diet.

I can’t say that I’ve ever had a kitten that suckled on itself… until now. Peppermint is obsessed with “nursing” on her arm. Camphor sometimes tries to join in (no issues with sucking in inappropriate areas). It makes me sad that these two were separated from their mama too early and have to seek comfort in other ways.

I’m struggling with getting them to eat enough. They haven’t eaten any kibble and are picky with wet food. I’ve offered multiple kinds of each. They are having some tummy troubles, too, which isn’t helping. Hopefully things will start to improve soon and weights will start going in the right direction.

NEW FOSTERS! 🩷🩷

Peppermint (calico) and Camphor (black and white) are joining me from IndyHumane. They are about six weeks old and need to gain some weight. They will only be with me for about a week and a half. I have several personal and work trips over the next couple of months, the first of which I leave for on September 17. I didn’t want to go the entire month without any fosters, so I was glad to be able to help with a short term placement for these girls.

In case you were wondering how Dash is doing at the shelter. He’s still having a ball! 😹 I found him lying on his back in his bed playing with a toy when I visited him while volunteering this afternoon.

I also got to meet his forever mom, who also stopped in to visit him. She’s super nice and so excited to bring him home soon. ❤️
