Red had his follow up visit with internal medicine specialist Dr.
Owens … one of his kidney values is now normal and the other is slightly elevated. We are waiting for the results of his urinalysis as this will give us protein levels being excreted and is a big indicator of kidney function. A new hit today, tho … Red’s blood pressure was really high! 😥 Apparently there’s a direct correlation between protein levels being excreted and blood pressure. He’s starting a really safe low dose BP medication. However, Red was pretty anxious about going back to a place where he’d been for 4 days without his moms or Cassidy so this surely contributed to a high BP reading. We go back in 10 days for a re-check.
Dr. Owens said this sudden onset attack which resulted in emergency stay at vet was either caused by worsening kidney disease (Red was diagnosed Stage 2 a month ago) caused by an autoimmune problem or else as a result of an Acute Kidney Injury caused by a medication. We will know in about a month which it was … we are definitely hoping for the latter as we absolutely don’t want to see his kidney disease getting worse!
I was SHOCKED at yesterday’s total vet bill!!! For a blood test, urinalysis, additional Lepto test (Red had slight positive previously so they want to re-check just in case) and visit with internal med Doc, the cost was $1061!!!! Holy Crap!!! Since Covid, vet costs have doubled and tripled … it’s insane!!! Add to that the financial struggles everyone is facing so donations just aren’t feasible … people can’t pay bills! 😥 Everybody is hurting … BUT the total now for Red’s kidney emergency crisis is about $8000! We have been blessed in that we’ve been able to get donations of about $4000 so far … but we’ve had so many expenses with routine vet bills as well as other veterinary costs in addition to normal day to day running of a rescue. We are in the red …. Please … we need help … WON’T YOU HELP US HELP THEM? All donations are tax deductible and so greatly appreciated!! There is a “Donate” button associated with this post or checks can be mailed to us at: PO Box 421798; Indy; 46242. Thank you so so much in advance … and would you please share this post?
