Imagine a training program for shelter dogs inside the Hutchinson Correctionsl Facility. Lucky Dog is just such a program. Friends of Animals in Need, Inc., a non-profit organization licensed in the state of Kansas operates the program with the help of adoptions and donations. Over twenty years ago the warden of HCF
asked Ruth Ann Spitzer and Vicky Hollowell to start a dog training program to improve the chances
of shelter dogs being adopted. Our dogs are tested for temperament and fully vetted prior to going into the prison. Lucky Dogs are cared for and trained by teams of inmates chosen after an interviewing process and live with them 24/7. Lucky Dogs are made available through an adoption process
when training is complete. Our dogs are larger breeds and are house and basic obedience trained.
