Missouri temperatures: Hot. 🌞

Dogsville residents: Opinions varied.

Some dipped a paw in and immediately decided they had seen enough.

Some stood in the pool long enough to contemplate their life choices.

A select few discovered that splashing around on a hot day might actually be pretty fun.

Whether they loved it, tolerated it, or politely declined participation, every dog in today's video experienced something brand new. For many of these dogs, simple things like kiddie pools, playtime, and carefree summer afternoons are completely new adventures.

And honestly? Watching them figure it all out is half the fun.

Join us for a little poolside fun with some of our Dogsville residents as they beat the Missouri heat one paw at a time. 💦🐾

From our very first night on February 18, 2007, to today, National Mill Dog Rescue has grown in ways we never could have imagined.

What began in the backyard of our founder, Theresa, with help from anyone willing to show up, quickly grew into something much bigger. By 2008, the need had become so great that we began renting the building we still call home today.

In 2018, we received an incredible gift: our very own veterinary clinic and rehab ward, made possible by an amazingly generous donor with a heart for the dogs.

Today, NMDR is made up of full-time dog care staff, behavior staff, grooming staff, outreach, events, and education teams, and countless volunteers whose time, compassion, and dedication are truly invaluable. Alongside them are more and more supporters—people just like you—who make this mission possible.

We have also expanded into Missouri with our very own facility there, and we’ll be highlighting it soon so you can see just how amazing the work, the space, and the team are.

After 19 years, we never dreamed NMDR would grow into what it is today. We are grateful every single day for the opportunity to rescue, rehabilitate, and love these dogs as they take their next steps forward.

Thank you to every adopter, volunteer, donor, supporter, staff member, and friend who has been part of this journey.

Hero has been getting into all sorts of places he doesn't belong lately.

The rescue van. The workshop. The laundry room. Parts of the kennel that definitely aren't on his approved list.

But there are two places Hero absolutely does belong: in a home and in someone's heart.

This adorable young Maltipoo has come so far since arriving at Dogsville. Once very frightened and unsure of the world around him, Hero now enjoys playing with dog friends, exploring new things, and showing off more of his sweet personality every day. While he has made incredible progress, he still needs a patient, dog-savvy adopter who understands that shy dogs sometimes need a little extra time and encouragement as they continue to build confidence.

Hero would love a home with another friendly dog to help show him the ropes and remind him that life is meant to be enjoyed. The shelter has helped him heal, but what he really needs now is a family of his own.

Take a look through these photos to see all the places Hero doesn't belong... and the one place he does.

When Hero first arrived, fear shaped nearly every part of his world.

This young Maltipoo was unsure of people, uncertain about handling, and struggled to trust that he was safe. But day by day, with patience, consistency, and a whole lot of love, Hero has shown us just how much healing is possible.

Today, he plays. He tumbles. He gets the zoomies. He enjoys being around people he knows and trusts. In so many ways, he's becoming the happy young dog he was always meant to be.

Hero is still working through a few challenges and will need an experienced adopter who understands that healing is a journey, not a finish line. But he's ready for that next step. He's ready for a home where he can continue building confidence, making progress, and discovering all the wonderful things life has to offer.

Join Ron as he shares more about Hero's incredible transformation and what kind of family this special boy is hoping to find.

Little Peachie has been busy working on the feng shui of her ex-pen! This adorable Shih Tzu decided the layout just wasn't quite right and took it upon herself to rearrange the sides until she found what she thought was the perfect fit.

As it turns out, Peachie wasn't just searching for the perfect setup—she was waiting for the perfect family. Like so many dogs who come through National Mill Dog Rescue, Peachie got the chance to leave her past behind and discover a world filled with comfort, kindness, and love.

Today, Peachie has found her perfect fit: a forever home of her very own. We have a feeling her family won't mind if she occasionally shares a few feng shui suggestions. Congratulations, sweet Peachie! May your days be filled with happiness, soft beds, and all the love you deserve.

If you need a reason to become an Angel Donor, Hero just gave it to us.

For so long, Hero carried the weight of fear on his shoulders. Every small step forward was hard-earned. Every bit of trust took patience, time, and love.

And then something incredible happened.

Hero got the zoomies.

The kind of joyful, carefree, full-speed zoomies that happen when a dog finally feels safe enough to let go and simply be happy.

This video is brought to you by our Angel Donors.

Because Angel Donors don't just provide food, veterinary care, warm beds, and enrichment. They provide healing. They provide second chances. They provide the time dogs need to discover who they were always meant to be.

Every month, Angel Donors help make moments like this possible for dogs who arrive frightened, uncertain, and still learning that the world can be kind.

Today it's Hero's first zoomies.

Tomorrow it will be another dog's first tail wag, first toy, first cuddle, or first happy home.

Become an Angel Donor and help create more firsts.

Because sometimes the greatest gift you can give a dog is the chance to feel joy again.

Another beautiful week of new beginnings is in the books.

Rocky, Sugar, Nicky, Sugar, Skipper, Clementine, Doree, Marlee, Ty, Horace, Stetson, Vivi, and Finn have all found families to call their own… and there is nothing sweeter than watching dogs leave rescue behind and step into lives filled with love.

For some, this moment came quickly. For others, it took time, patience, and healing before the right person walked through the door. But every single one of these dogs now gets to experience what it means to truly belong.

Soft beds. Safe homes. Gentle hands. And people who will love them simply because they are theirs.

To the adopters… thank you for saying yes. Thank you for opening your hearts to dogs who deserved a chance to finally just be cherished companions.

And to these sweet pups… may your days ahead be filled with comfort, adventure, and all the happiness you’ve waited so long to find.

If you’ve been thinking about adoption, there are still many wonderful dogs waiting for their moment.

Visit our website to meet them.
