Melani Andrews walked into Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento with a very specific request.
She was not looking for the youngest dog. She was not looking for the easiest dog. She asked the shelter to show her the oldest dog they had, and the one who kept getting passed over.
That dog was Jake.
Jake was 12 years old and had already been waiting at the shelter for a while. He had terminal cancer, skin problems, teeth problems, and special needs that made many people walk past his kennel without choosing him. But Melani did not see a dog who was too old or too sick to love.
She saw a dog who still wanted a home.
Melani had also been through deep loss. Her husband had passed away in January, and one month later, her dog Lola died too. Her granddaughters told her she needed another dog to keep her company, and when she met Jake, something about him stayed with her.
On his kennel was a sign that said he was mellow, small, and hoping someone would adopt him into a loving family soon. Melani said she could see he was a fighter and that he missed having a home.
So she adopted him.
Jake settled in quickly. He loved covering himself with a pillowcase and a fleece blanket at bedtime. Because he was skinny, delicate, and covered with sores, Melani handled him gently and helped him down from the bed so he would not get hurt.
She knew they might not have much time together. But she chose him anyway.
And sometimes, that is the purest kind of love: choosing the dog no one else chose, and making sure his final chapter is filled with comfort, dignity, and home.
