We started working with Brussel and his family back in May. Brussel is a 2 year old Beagle X Jack Russel mix who had been surrendered to SA Humane by his original owners when he was around a year old. He remained at the shelter for some time before being adopted earlier this year by his new family and K9 brother, Broccoli💚.

Brussel likes other dogs, but struggles a bit with arousal control (both on and off leash) and can be a bit mouthy while playing; which is one of the many reasons why muzzle training was one of the first skills that we started, along with a solid response to his name, some loose leash work and enrichment driven walks, targeting, and recall.

Brussel also came with a history of being worried at the vet, his paperwork from the shelter said that he had to be sedated for exams. At home, Brussel also displayed some insecurities around handling; so, of course we are building in some cooperative care🤗. His humans have started doing “happy vet visits” to work on creating a more positive association to going to the vet, and they are already seeing some progress! Last time they went, Brussel was able to take cheese from staff, he was able to be weighed AND he even allowed the vet to examine his mouth, without sedation.

Brussel is a smart little dude and seems to enjoy the process of learning 🥹. We’re excited to be a part of he and his family’s journey together 🥰

Over the last several weeks, we have started working on building Baxter’s comfort and confidence around toddlers. We’re doing this by utilizing protective contact and creating positive experiences, along with building a sense of predictability around what can often be an unpredictable stimulus.

I was so stinking proud of Baxter today 🥲💜🥹

This incredible dog has come leaps and bounds from where we started. When I met Baxter, back in January of 2023, he was scared of the world; anything new was terrifying to him: people, places, sounds, objects, large dogs, and so much more. He had handling sensitivities, he’d displayed some aggression towards other dogs, fence-fought with the neighbors’ dogs, he’d nipped at people’s ankles, was scared of the plants in his home, and he hadn’t been comfortable enough outside to venture farther than his block. His mom and I had our work cut out for us 🥲, but little by little, we continued to build his confidence and created resilience where there previously had been none.

Fast forward to today, a little over three years later, he’s an entirely different dog whose world continues to gradually expand.

😍Look at the difference in the overall arousal of this play session vs the video posted from last week! Colby initiated the interaction today and both dogs were able to take their own breaks during play 🙌🏼

One detail that I do want to point out though, is that this play session was at Colby’s house, whereas the last one was done at Molly’s. Molly has also displayed some guarding behavior around toys at her house that hasn’t been displayed while at Colby’s. And since we always want to do the best we can to set our dogs up for success, we have decided to keep play sessions at Colby’s house for the time being. Overtime, we will work towards generalizing these skills to other contexts and environments, but for now, we will stick to the environment that Molly has demonstrated the most success in.

Molly is rocking her new basket muzzle from The Muzzle Movement 😍 This muzzle is super light and allows for a full pant. Molly LOVES other dogs, but struggles a bit with arousal control and overly mouthy behavior. Now that she’s fully muzzle trained, she can learn how to interact, safely.

I’m stinkin’ proud of Baxter and his momma and everything that they continue to accomplish together 👏🏼🥹💜

Do you have a dog who is nervous or reactive around new people, unfamiliar dogs, strange objects or locations? You’re not alone, and we can help 🐾 Let’s talk about it 🙂

Grace is a 5 year old Great Dane who had been struggling with some frustration driven leash reactivity, especially when she saw other dogs or wildlife. Grace weighs over 100 lbs and had pulled her mum to the ground quite a few times with all the lunging and pulling she had been doing. So, we started off by conditioning Grace to a head halter in order to gain some better control and help the human end of the leash stay safe while training.

Grace’s mum learned some new handling techniques and created a consistent baseline criteria of ‘calmness’ for access to anything. We built up some loose leash walking skills, and then combined that with a BAT (Behavior Adjustment Training) inspired approach to addressing the over arousal and leash reactivity, and within only a few short months we’ve made some incredible progress! 🙌🏼

I could not do what I do without Dax’s help 🥹

Coco is 3.5 month old Golden Retriever who was a bit overwhelmed in his group puppy class. His mum said that he’d run and hide when the other puppies tried to engage with him. So, today I brought Dax with me and did a much slower intro, letting Coco set the pace.

When Coco initially saw us, he immediately started barking and wanting to run away; but with a little bit of counter conditioning, his emotions and behavior started to change. Over the course of an hour, Coco’s curiosity grew as he continued to become more and more comfortable 🥲 and eventually, he started offering some play bows and doing zoom zooms!

With time and a few more sessions with Dax, I’m hoping that Coco will gain enough confidence to where he’s able to return to his puppy class; but if not, that’s okay too. Group classes can be a bit intimidating and aren’t ideal for everyone. Coco is such a sweet little pup with a great family, and he really seems to enjoy learning 💜 I want to make sure that he feels safe and comfortable all along the way as he learns and grows.

Do you have a dog who struggles with traditional nail trims? If so, scratch boards can be a fun, stress free alternative while we work on building the trust and skills needed for cooperative care 🤗

Getting updates like these from clients makes my heart so happy 🥹💜👏🏼

Adolescence can be a tough time period for many dogs and their guardians 🫶🏼 Both Molly (15 mo brown Shepherd mix) and Zai (9 mo Golden Doodle) have been working on building confidence, while also working on arousal control and emotional regulation skills. Before we started training, Zai displayed over the top excitement 😅 ALL the time. There was no off switch unless she she was in her kennel. Zai was very mouthy with humans, she jumped and grabbed at any loose clothing and was unable to be handled or pet without peeing herself. Molly, on the other hand, was a bit more timid around humans, but needed help learning to dial down the intensity around other dogs.

With consistency, some added structure, relaxation, environmental management, adequate enrichment and creating a baseline criteria of calmness for access to anything; both dogs have come leaps and bounds in a relatively short period of time. I couldn’t be more proud of them and their families 🤗

👏🏼 Keep up the good work guys!

The leash is a seatbelt, not a steering wheel 😉 Equipment helps with management, but it doesn’t train the behavior you want, reinforcement does.
