Lilly Rose, Hemi Grace, Tucker, and Gracie have been in my care since July 2024. I was referred to their wonderful parents, Bre and Shaun, through a mutual friend, and I’ve had the joy of caring for their pack ever since.

When I first met Tucker, their English Bulldog, Bre and Shaun warned me that he was extremely territorial and reactive toward new people—especially with direct eye contact. On my first visit, he lunged toward me, growling and snarling defensively. Territorial aggression is common in dogs like Tucker; research from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) indicates that it often stems from a combination of fear, anxiety, and the instinct to protect valued resources—including their humans or territory. Importantly, territorial dogs are not “aggressive by nature”—their reactivity is a response to perceived threats.

To help Tucker feel safe and gradually build trust, we developed a structured plan of weekly visits for three months. I approached calmly, treats in hand, avoiding direct eye contact. Bre would drive down the street to be out of sight, giving him space to let his guard down with me and learn that my presence was non-threatening. Consistent positive reinforcement and controlled exposure are highly effective in reducing territorial and fear-based aggression.

Over time, Tucker began to associate my visits with positive experiences. After three months, he greeted me at the door with a wagging tail (and body), ready for love and attention—and soon after, we progressed to overnights! The once territorial dog who lunged at my face now showers me with kisses, follows me everywhere around the house, and has become one of the most rewarding bonds of my pet care career.

Recently, Bre and Shaun welcomed a new pup, Bodie, who brings a playful energy to the pack. They are truly amazing pet parents, and it’s been such a privilege to watch this sweet, dynamic pack thrive.
