⚠️ NEW WORLD SCREWWORM UPDATE FOR TEXAS ANIMAL OWNERS ⚠️
Many of you have seen news reports about the New World Screwworm (NWS), a flesh-eating parasite that has recently been confirmed in South Texas. While there are currently no known cases in our immediate area, this is something every animal owner should be aware of.
New World Screwworm can affect any warm-blooded animal, including horses, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, cats, wildlife, and even people. The adult fly is attracted to open wounds, where it lays eggs. The larvae then feed on living tissue, causing rapidly worsening wounds that require immediate veterinary attention.
What should you watch for?
• Any open wound that suddenly worsens
• Excessive drainage or bleeding
• A foul smell from a wound
• Visible larvae ("maggots")
• Animals that become painful, depressed, or stop eating
The most important thing you can do is inspect your animals regularly and treat wounds promptly. Pay special attention to surgical sites, umbilical areas in newborn animals, cuts, abrasions, and areas around the eyes, nose, mouth, or other body openings.
The disease is currently spreading primarily through movement of infested animals. Because of this, animal movement restrictions and surveillance efforts are underway in affected areas of South Texas. USDA, APHIS, FDA, TAHC, and other agencies are actively working to contain and eradicate the parasite. Recent response efforts include quarantines, surveillance, and sterile-fly release programs that have successfully eradicated screwworm in the past.
Horse & Hound Mobile Veterinary Services is preparing by stocking approved emergency-use medications that may help prevent or treat screwworm infestations in horses and other livestock when appropriate. We also encourage dog owners to keep pets current on veterinarian-recommended parasite prevention products.
