Hi, I’m Dolly! I'm only 4 and I have a new human baby who lives with me now. That baby has diapers and blankets, and is always dropping things on the floor.

I thought these things were snacks...

They weren't...

So that's how I ended up in the animal ER with diarrhea, vomiting and no appetite for anything at that point.

Bloodwork came back abnormal, indicating a possible infection. I was given a shot to help me stop vomiting, some pain medication (you know how much a stomach ache can hurt), and fluids to help me rehydrate. I also have medications to take at home, and my family will keep a close eye on me. If my symptoms continue or worsen, I will need to come back and be checked for a foreign body obstruction in my gastrointestinal system. I hope I don't have that but if I do, we know where to go!

Love, Dolly🐾

One day, my mom and dad noticed something wasn’t right with me. I was coughing, stretching my neck to breathe, vomiting, and not feeling like myself at all.

They rushed me to the animal emergency hospital!

The VERGI team took x-rays of my lungs and saw signs consistent with aspiration pneumonia. I also had the GI upset. Sometimes I get nervous and lick the carpet (hey, we all have our weird things!) so there was concern that I might also have a foreign body obstruction, but the ultrasound cleared me of that!

We began medications and treatment to help me feel better. They even made sure my anxiety stayed under control because apparently my habit of stress-licking carpets isn’t exactly an option in the hospital!

This week, my parents sent an update saying I’m continuing to improve, my lungs sounded okay at my follow-up, and I haven’t been coughing. I still have a little healing left to do and am staying on antibiotics until they are finished! Sometimes, animals with pneumonia will seem better so people stop giving antibiotics. Don’t do that! The infection still needs to clear. I listened and learned while I was at VERGI!

These photos of me may hurt your heart but my story needs to be told.

I hope you will stop and read it.

No animal or person becomes emaciated overnight. I spent a very long time slowly starving to near death.

The shelter thinks I was dumped in this condition. Someone reported me to animal control, who came and picked me up. I have a microchip, and I have a name - it is Xena. My body had nearly wasted away. I had fleas. A lot of fleas. The fleas made me anemic. I was also dehydrated.

My tail, though? It still wagged, even before I started to feel better. I think it does something to humans to see that. They get really happy instead of sad. And THAT makes my tail wag even more!

I have to be carefully fed since my body was starved for so long. Too much food can be very dangerous for emaciated animals so we get put on something called a refeeding plan. Slow, controlled nutrition helps our bodies recover safely. If we eat too much at once, Refeeding Syndrome (which can be fatal) may occur.

Shelters will often send out pleas for help. I was one of those pleas. Scout's Honor Rescue, Inc. saved me, along with 23 other dogs. And you know what they did after that? They went back and saved 3 more!! 27 lives saved🐾

I hope you will donate to help them save more dogs like me - they can only do this work if people donate. I’m still here because of them, and people like you. Even sharing helps!

Love, Xena

A few days ago, the amazing Scout's Honor Rescue, Inc. pulled 24 dogs from the Harris Co shelter. TWENTY-FOUR. 24 lives given a second chance, 24 lives saved.

One of those lives was a chocolate lab Lenny! Lenny was lying in his kennel, having a hard time breathing. The rescue rushed him straight to our hospital, where we found got busy diagnosing all this sweet boy had going on.

He is heartworm positive and has possible pneumonia or pneumonitis. We found a rock in his belly, of all things, on xray. Thankfully, it is non-obstructive. He has hip dysplasia, and an enlarged prostate as well.

The good news is he is a happy boy, has a healthy appetite and is already feeling better! He is pure lab, loves other dogs and people, and...
..He's ready to go to a foster home!

Lenny and Scout's Honor Rescue, Inc. need your help. Want to foster? Contact Scout's Honor! Donations are also needed and welcomed so that they can continue doing the incredible work they do daily.

Meet Ranger! Ranger is a 2-year-old male Golden Retriever who came to our animal ER because his face was swollen! Ranger’s dad explained that he took him on a field trip to the farm where something may have bitten him.

Our veterinarian noticed a small puncture wound with dried blood on Ranger’s muzzle. We recommended blood work to eliminate the possibility of snake envenomation.

The bloodwork came back abnormal, consistent with pit viper snake envenomation. We immediately gave Ranger antivenom. He began to improve after the antivenom treatment but stayed overnight so we could continue supportive care and monitor his bloodwork.

Ranger’s repeat bloodwork was returning to normal so he was able to go home! He should continue to improve everyday but his dad was told to bring him back if he noticed anything concerning.

Pit viper venom is a powerful cocktail of toxins and enzymes that can quickly damage tissue, affect blood clotting, cause swelling and pain, and in serious cases impact muscles, nerves, the heart, and other body systems.

Hey lady...you keep yourself over there, OK? (see pic one!)

Howdy! I’m Blue and I bet you are wondering how I ended up in the animal ER. Well, I started vomiting and it just so happens that my dad noticed half of a pair of underwear. Neither he nor I know how or when *that* happened. He did seem pretty sure if one of us ate said un**es, it had not been him. Then he looked at me (shocker, I know) and said I was going to the emergency vet.

The team at VERGI took x-rays of my insides but didn't see an obvious obstruction. This may mean that the foreign body (underwear) may be making its way out naturally, or it may mean that it is simply not visible, or it may mean that I didn’t eat anything weird at all (probably not that last one, though.)

But Dad, if I'm the innocent one... 😏🧐

KIDDING, DAD! I love you! Plus just look at my face! (see pics 1 AND 2)

I was given an injection to stop the vomiting and some fluids to make me feel better. The doctor said it was ok for me to go home after that. Dad will watch me closely at home. I am supposed to cut back on my eating for a little bit and if I continue to vomit or become painful, I need to come back to VERGI for an ultrasound.

Dad is probably checking my poops, waiting to say I told you so!

Love, Blue 🐾

Cats are curious by nature… but sometimes our curiosity gets us into trouble!

A few days ago, I randomly found some pills on the floor and thought oh, I have a bit of an idea! 💡

Turns out, it wasn't one of my finest moments. The medication was a blood thinner called Eliquis. As soon as my family realized the error of my ways, they rushed me to the animal emergency hospital. They were pretty worried, and for very good reason.

The ingestion of blood thinners can be life-threatening pet emergencies. Because this medication is designed to prevent clotting, pets can experience significant internal bleeding if they ingest it.

The Critical Care Team at VERGI moved quickly to help me as soon as we arrived!

They got me to vomit, hoping that the pill(s) would come up. I threw up twice for them...but no pills.

My clotting times were checked to make sure my blood was still working the way it should. Thankfully, my tests were NORMAL!! ❤️

Perhaps I shall dial the ol' curiosity down a notch!
Love,

Owen 🐱 (who is very thankful for his family loving him so much!)
