Don’t let this sweet face fool you! Little Roco decided that not only was get going to get a treat, he was also going to brush his teeth.

Being an efficient fella, he wanted to do both at once so he grabbed the entire bag of Greenies dental treats!

Greenies are non-toxic but can cause some GI upset if eaten in large quantities. To be on the safe side, Roco’s humans approved radiographs/x-rays to look for any possibility of obstruction. Luckily, no obstruction was seen but Roco did have a large amount of digested material found within the stomach.

Roco was able to go home with anti-nausea medication and a probiotic to make sure his GI tract was protected. We recommended repeat radiographs to be sure everything in his stomach had moved safely along.

We are pretty excited that Roco wants to take care of his teeth (dental health is a very important component of overall health!) but next time he feels the need to brush, we hope he remembers to take one treat instead of the whole bag!

Hi, I’m Dolly! I'm only 4 and I have a new human baby who lives with me now. That baby has diapers and blankets, and is always dropping things on the floor.

I thought these things were snacks...

They weren't...

So that's how I ended up in the animal ER with diarrhea, vomiting and no appetite for anything at that point.

Bloodwork came back abnormal, indicating a possible infection. I was given a shot to help me stop vomiting, some pain medication (you know how much a stomach ache can hurt), and fluids to help me rehydrate. I also have medications to take at home, and my family will keep a close eye on me. If my symptoms continue or worsen, I will need to come back and be checked for a foreign body obstruction in my gastrointestinal system. I hope I don't have that but if I do, we know where to go!

Love, Dolly🐾

One day, my mom and dad noticed something wasn’t right with me. I was coughing, stretching my neck to breathe, vomiting, and not feeling like myself at all.

They rushed me to the animal emergency hospital!

The VERGI team took x-rays of my lungs and saw signs consistent with aspiration pneumonia. I also had the GI upset. Sometimes I get nervous and lick the carpet (hey, we all have our weird things!) so there was concern that I might also have a foreign body obstruction, but the ultrasound cleared me of that!

We began medications and treatment to help me feel better. They even made sure my anxiety stayed under control because apparently my habit of stress-licking carpets isn’t exactly an option in the hospital!

This week, my parents sent an update saying I’m continuing to improve, my lungs sounded okay at my follow-up, and I haven’t been coughing. I still have a little healing left to do and am staying on antibiotics until they are finished! Sometimes, animals with pneumonia will seem better so people stop giving antibiotics. Don’t do that! The infection still needs to clear. I listened and learned while I was at VERGI!

These photos of me may hurt your heart but my story needs to be told.

I hope you will stop and read it.

No animal or person becomes emaciated overnight. I spent a very long time slowly starving to near death.

The shelter thinks I was dumped in this condition. Someone reported me to animal control, who came and picked me up. I have a microchip, and I have a name - it is Xena. My body had nearly wasted away. I had fleas. A lot of fleas. The fleas made me anemic. I was also dehydrated.

My tail, though? It still wagged, even before I started to feel better. I think it does something to humans to see that. They get really happy instead of sad. And THAT makes my tail wag even more!

I have to be carefully fed since my body was starved for so long. Too much food can be very dangerous for emaciated animals so we get put on something called a refeeding plan. Slow, controlled nutrition helps our bodies recover safely. If we eat too much at once, Refeeding Syndrome (which can be fatal) may occur.

Shelters will often send out pleas for help. I was one of those pleas. Scout's Honor Rescue, Inc. saved me, along with 23 other dogs. And you know what they did after that? They went back and saved 3 more!! 27 lives saved🐾

I hope you will donate to help them save more dogs like me - they can only do this work if people donate. I’m still here because of them, and people like you. Even sharing helps!

Love, Xena

You may be asking yourself...gee, I wonder how this adorably sweet girl ended up at the animal ER. Let me tell you my story!

I'm not an only dog - I have siblings. Like siblings do, we sometimes quarrel. WELL! Mine decided to surprise attack and I ended up with bite marks around my neck, which became swollen, and then I began coughing.

My VERGI care team gave me something so I could have a little nap while they tended to my wounds and took x-rays. Nothing showed on x-ray to explain my cough, so that was good news.

I was all bandaged up and sent home with medications to help me feel better, and help prevent infection. Bite wounds can be especially dangerous due to the bacteria in the mouth which can cause infection.

I'm feeling a lot better now but I think I will sleep with one eye open for a while!

See ya!

Many pet lovers share their homes with more than one pet and often, more than one species, too!

Diamond lives with a dog friend who takes Carprofen (Rimadyl), a flavored NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). This is a drug that is often used in dogs but is very toxic in cats.

Diamond did not make note of this fact and ate a 75mg Carprofen less than an hour before he arrived to our animal emergency hospital.

Poison control was quickly called for consult since the quantity ingested was at a toxic dose to Diamond. NSAID toxicity in cats can lead to kidney damage and kidney failure, as well as severe gastrointestinal issues such as ulceration, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, black or bloody diarrhea, lethargy, inappetence and even death.

Emesis (inducing vomiting) and activated charcoal were recommended by poison control, along with baseline bloodwork and fluid therapy for at least 48 hours. Activated charcoal is used for emergency poison treatment in cats. It acts like a porous sponge in the gastrointestinal tract, binding to certain toxins and preventing the cat's body from absorbing them.

After 48 hours and close monitoring of her renal values, Diamond was discharged and able to go home with her family and furry friends.

No more counter surfing, sweet Diamond!

Important Information:

Carprofen is a prescription-only drug used in veterinary medicine to manage pain and inflammation in dogs. It is commonly prescribed for osteoarthritis, soft tissue injuries, and post-operative recovery. ❌Carprofen should NEVER be given with steroids (ideally, a week off steroids prior to starting is also recommended) or other NSAIDS like aspirin or meloxicam❌ Blood tests are frequently recommended before and during long-term use to ensure the dog's liver and kidneys are handling the medication properly.
