How to Get Your Dog to ACTUALLY Listen —>3 Things Most Owners Miss
A dog ignoring you doesn't always mean they're stubborn. A lot of the time, they simply haven't learned that listening to you has relevance.
Here are 3 things you can start doing TODAY:
1️⃣ Stop repeating the command.
If you say “sit… sit… SIT!” 5 times, your dog learns that the first command doesn't really matter.
Give the command once, then calmly follow through with whatever you've taught the dog to do. Reward the correct response.
2️⃣ Make listening worth it. 🦴
Don't only reward your dog when they're already doing something perfectly.
Catch the behaviors you WANT:
Looking at you
Coming when called
Walking beside you
Sitting calmly
Choosing to disengage from distractions
Reward those moments. You're teaching your dog, “Paying attention to my handler pays off," and, "I can be rewarded at any moment."
3️⃣ Don't jump straight into distractions.
If your dog can sit perfectly in your living room but ignores you around other dogs, squirrels, people, and cars, that doesn't necessarily mean the training failed.
It means you increased the difficulty too quickly.
Build the behavior in stages:
House → Yard → Quiet neighborhood → More distractions → Real-world environments
Make it easy enough for your dog to succeed, then gradually increase the challenge.
Try this today:
Pick ONE command your dog already knows.
Practice it for 5 minutes in a low-distraction environment and reward every good response.
Then tell me in the comments:
