One of my favorite things about training is watching dogs learn how to exist around each other successfully, regardless of their size!

In this video, all are reactive dogs, my Pomeranian is working obedience around dogs that outweigh her many times over. Not because she’s intimidated, but because she understands the expectations and has been taught how to focus, think, and work through distractions.

The German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois are free to play. The Pomeranian is free to work. Nobody is stressed, nobody is being micromanaged, and nobody needs to be separated.

That’s what structure creates.

A lot of people assume successful dog management comes from having physically strong dogs, calm dogs, or dogs that naturally get along. More often, it comes from clear communication, consistency, and teaching each dog how to make good choices around excitement.

Whether a dog is 8 pounds or 80 pounds, the principles stay the same.

Every Chihuahua believes they’re a 300-pound warrior trapped in a 6-pound body.

This is Sparta!

And just like that, the kingdom changed hands.

Enjoy these moments from today’s consultation with a 2 month old Belgian Malinois and an 18 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback. Their owner showed me their different speeds in a new environment and interacting with food and toy 😄

Raeve the Mali will be starting her journey with the puppy program & Ransom will be starting the private lesson program after. Raeve is a blank slate and Ransom has some environmental nerves to work on. Both dogs are juvenile and will be supported with training as they grow and mature!

Their owner hopes to build a solid foundation and relationship with them and work towards goals of work and sport depending on what each dog takes to!

One of the things I value most as a trainer isn’t just helping dogs, it’s helping people feel confident, informed, and supported throughout the process.

Today I met with 4 year old rescue dog Fred and his owner to discuss resource guarding, household management, and creating more confidence when handling and living with him alongside their other dog. Having worked with a trainer previously and not having the best experience, she came into our consultation with understandable hesitations and a lot of questions.

Building trust starts long before any training program begins.

I’m grateful she felt heard, supported, and more hopeful after our conversation. My goal is always that clients leave a consultation with a clearer understanding of their dog, a realistic path forward, and the confidence that they’re not navigating these challenges alone.

Dog training is about far more than teaching behaviors. It’s about communication, education, and building a relationship, not only with the dog, but with the people who love them. If we can’t connect with and support the humans on the other end of the leash, lasting success becomes much harder to achieve!

Thank you for the kind words, Roxana. I’m looking forward to helping you and Fred on this journey. 💚🤘🏼

Whether you’re a pet owner or a trainer, the dogs in your life deserve more than the leftovers of your day. A few minutes of engagement, training, play, or simply being present can go a long way. Your relationship is built in those small moments! 💚

One of the most common jokes you’ll hear from dog trainers is that after spending all day training everyone else’s dogs, they don’t have any energy left for their own. It’s usually said with a laugh, but sometimes there’s a little truth hiding behind it. I’ve been guilty of this as well!

If you find yourself constantly putting your personal dogs on the back burner, consider it a check-engine light. Not a reason for guilt, just a reminder to pay attention.

As trainers, we’re constantly teaching clients about consistency, engagement, relationship building, enrichment, and making time for their dogs. It’s important that we’re living those same principles ourselves. Our personal dogs deserve our time, training, outings, play sessions, and quality interactions just as much as any client dog. They are often our greatest teachers, our training partners, and the reason many of us got into this profession in the first place.

A busy schedule is part of the job, but so is managing it well enough to make room for the dogs waiting for us at home.

Be the example. Practice what you preach. And don’t forget to spend some time with your own dog today. 🐾
