Service dogs exist to support their disabled handler in everyday. That access depends on one thing—respecting the clear distinction between service dogs and pets.

A lot of the problem comes from trainers who misrepresent or water down ADA standards, whether intentionally or not.

And that has real-world impact. It changes how access is handled in everyday spaces.
We can do better. And it starts with holding the training industry accountable for what it teaches, and being honest about what ADA law actually says—not what people want it to say.

One of the biggest mistakes I see with barking is people trying to completely stop the behavior without teaching the dog what TO do instead.

Some dogs are naturally vocal. Especially breeds like an Australian Shepherd. Barking is genetic for a lot of these dogs and expecting them to never bark usually does not end well.

Instead of fighting the behavior, I like to put it on cue.

Why? Because once the dog understands when barking is appropriate, it becomes a lot easier to teach them when to stop. The behavior becomes more predictable, structured, and manageable over time.

Teaching a dog to “speak” can actually help build a much better “quiet.”

A lot of owners are surprised by that, but giving the behavior clarity instead of constantly correcting it tends to create a dog that is less frustrated and easier to communicate with overall.

You can train almost any “unwanted” behavior into a command like this. The goal is not to encourage the behavior all the time, it’s to create clarity, communication, and control around it.
