💉 RABIES VACCINATION: PROTECTING MORE THAN JUST OUR PETS 💉
Rabies is a deadly viral disease that can affect mammals, including our pets, horses, and livestock.
🐶Small Animals🐱
Dogs and cats should be kept current on their rabies vaccination. In the state of Texas, initial vaccination by a licensed veterinarian is required by 4 months of age.
Depending on where you live, local regulations may require vaccination every year, but some counties allow every 3 years. It is your responsibility to know local ordinances for where you live, but talk with your veterinarian about vaccine options at your pet(s) next visit. In addition to protecting your pet, vaccination helps protect your family and community from this fatal disease.
Although not required by law, it is recommended that domestic ferrets, wolf-dog hybrids, and livestock (especially those that have frequent contact with humans) be vaccinated against rabies.
🐴 🐑Large Animals🐄🐐
Rabies isn't just a concern for dogs and cats! Horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and other mammals can also contract rabies.
For our large animal patients, vaccination can be especially important because:
🦠 Rabies is almost always fatal once clinical signs develop
🦊 Wildlife such as skunks, raccoons, foxes, and bats can transmit rabies
🐴 Horses and livestock may have significant exposure to wildlife around pastures, barns, and feed areas
👩⚕️ Vaccination helps provide an important layer of protection for both animals and the people who care for them
⚠️ An important reminder: If you ever suspect that an animal has been exposed to a potentially rabid animal, do not handle the situation yourself. Contact your veterinarian and local animal/public health authorities for guidance.
🚨You will be required to provide proof of current rabies vaccination prior to Dr. Emily performing routine services for your animals. If proof cannot be provided, vaccination can be performed and services rescheduled at least 2 weeks later.
Please provide documentation if prior vaccine reaction has been managed by a veterinarian.
